You can get high capacity magazines in Colorado
We picked up a 30 round AR this afternoon, seems the legislation has major loopholes.
They had lots of 223, the hunt for 22LR continues.

The situation for .22LR is the same in Virginia I think everything else is available.

When I carried an M-16A1, we had 20 round mags and were instructed to load only 18 due to problems with the spring.
The M-1 Garand had an 8-round clip.
The M-1903 Springfield had five-rounds.
What do you need 30 for?

My rifle has a 5 round, my pistol 10.
I was the driver.
They had some 338 Lapua that was $6 a pop, single shot material!
I will probably pick up a single shot adapter for the rifle.
There is a replacement stock you can get for an AR that effectively makes it an automatic, it is called a Slidefire, I would have thought the extra capacity would be good then.
And like you say no need to fill it to its capacity anyway.

I did pick up 100 22LR. Also found a source on line but more that Wally world and better quality than I need for paper.
Seems that it may be several years before the Manufacturers catch up.
I would quite like an AR but overkill for gophers.

Was at a gun show today and 500 rounds of Remington .22LR was $65.
Just about all the common ammo was there expect the one I wanted 10 gauge No4 Turkey Load
High capacity mags were plentiful

Virginia doesn't have a law restricting large capacity magazines but Colorado restricted them in 2013.

I do not have a Ruger but there were boxes of the 25x2 (50 rounds) for sale, all very legal.
The trick it seems is that you sell them as a kit.
It does not really matter, it was always a political nonsense, the general assumption is that you would have to stock up out of State. So anybody who really really wanted some, not a problem.

This is the sort of AR we were looking at, but with the stock I mentioned that gets you through a lot of ammo very quickly.

I'm not convinced they are legal, ATF to the contrary: http://www.slidefire.com/downloads/BATFE.pdf
26 USC 5845(b) says:
The key word being "automatically" which ATF interprets as being a mechanical device:
Does the word "automatically" preclude the use of your finger as part of the mechanism, or the use of recoil? Only a court could say for sure.
26 USC 5845(b) says:
The term “machinegun” means any weapon which shoots, is designed to shoot, or can be readily restored to shoot, automatically more than one shot, without manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger.
The stock has no automatically functioning mechanical parts or springs and performs no automatic mechanical function when installed.
