Working in the states (NYC) using police skills (UK)
HI,
I'm new on this site and all information is grately received. I am a Detective Constable working for the M.E.T Police (London), I have 12 years police service and now specialise in Child Protection.
I'm a specialist child interviewer, Family Liasion Officer and can speak Punjabi and Urdu.
I would love to work abroad for a few years (or maybe longer) but I see from other threads its no easy task getting transfered to an American Police Force (and i'm not so sure I would want to do that anyway).
Now my question is are there any private firms or agencies that recruit for private companies who require investigators or people with my skills on a contact basis that anybody know's about?
Ideally I would like to work in New York as I have friends in the city.
Many thanks

No advice to offer, accept to say that surely you know Met is short for Metropolitan and thus should never be written M.E.T right?

Well there probably are firms. Probably none that'll go to the cost and hassle of importing someone though, when they could just hire any experienced ex-cop here who could start tomorrow and not cost anything extra.
Best bet would be to look into any kind of short term exchange program and not hold to much breath. Though Lansbury, might have posted some info about that kind of stuff in the past, worth a search.
Anyway, tot he OP, good luck and welcome to BE!

Realistically, working for the police, you have very little chance of securing a H-1B sponsor to work in the US.

Having retired to the US after 38 years in the Met good chunk of it in SO12 I found most contract work is with firms who have contracts with the Federal government. Which means US citizens only. Most private firms want US military of police experience and require that you have completed firearms training at a military or police academy. Knowing the local sheriff I got firearms trained by them. Your skills would appear suited to companies that do private detection work and they can recruit the best retiring from federal agencies over here.

There's a [i]chance[i/] that a major security and private investigations company might be interested, but as advised to many others here (in many different job lines) it is most likely if you get hired in the UK then later transfer to the US. Try Kroll, Wackenhut, Control Risks, and similar major security corporations.

I seem to recollect Pinkertons are owned by a Swedish Company. An internal transfer sounds a better chance.
There is always a chance, only you can decide how much effort you want to put into it.

US residents only for US police work. You could be a mercenary working in Afghanistan - especially if you speak Pushtu or Farsi !

Do you feel the police in this country should be armed? Because if you are ever able to be a cop you will be armed irrelevant of what area of policing you end up in. Consider your views on that situation before even thinking about anything else

Is there no roll for a met police officer in the British Embassy in new york. Is there no way you could transfer to diplomatic duties, would that open any doors?
