Question Women's clothing sizes

I wonder if anyone can help me here. I don't really buy clothes in women's clothes stores over here as I usually wear vintage jeans or stuff bought in England. What is the equivalent US sizing to that of English sizing. For example, an English 14 would be what? I don't quite get their way of sizing over here.

An English 14 is a US 12 (misses) it took me quite a while to work out my size, not helped by my ever expanding figure *blush*. Think the best way is to experiment, try things on until you find somewhere that suits your size, budget etc. Still have no idea about US shoe sizes though.

Thanks Jan. Shoes I've figured out. In UK sizes I'm a 6 and in the US I'm a women's 8.5 and a men's 7. Here's a useful chart to show international shoe sizes: Shoe sizing chart

Merrell's rock! I own 2 pairs of Chameleon Ventilator Lows, and I've just ordered a pair of Chameleon Stretchs for work. They're the best shoes in the world!

I think also, like at home, it varies from one store to another... for instance in Express or Lerners I can fit a 12 (US) no prob.... go to A&F or American Eagle and an XL is pushing it LOL....so I just quit shopping in the "skinny" stories

BTW... what are Merrells???

I know what you mean about sizing. When I go to Next or M&S I can pull their clothes off the rack and take them home without trying them on. Can't do that anywhere else, and some stores just downright embarrass you! New Look try to get away with telling me I'm an 18 (do what?) when in Next I'm a size 12. How dare they! LOL

Merrell's are actually hiking boots/shoes, but they are so amazingly strong and comfortable that you can wear them anywhere. I've just bought some for work as I'm on my feet all day, and get back ache if my feet aren't well supported. They look funky too!

The website is here: Merrell Boots

Default Re: Women's clothing sizes

I found that for womens clothing here in the States, I went down two sizes, e.g. a 12 in the UK and an 8 in the US.

I just hate the design of the trousers/pants here, for the most part - they're aimed at women with legs like drainpipes, i.e. one size up and down the leg and the rest of us who have a proper, womanly shape, i.e. arse, hips 'n' thighs have to hunt down stores which sell stuff that fits which makes me wonder, where the heck do all these women shop cos there aren't many, apart from the teeny-boppers, who have that stick-like figure?!

For shoes, it's up two sizes, e.g. a 7 in the UK and a 9 in the US. Oh, and Merrells rock though I currently only have two pairs, I'm looking to expand my 'collection'.

And let's face it, how many women in the USA have a stick figure? All those Dunkin' Donuts and you'd think they'd be a bit more varied. And what's this crap about sizing names over here. There's girls, juniors and misses. What the flop is a misses? I'm nearly 38 for crying out loud. I don't see any signs for Mrs sizes. Bleugh. I long for good ol' Marks and Sparks and Next.

Didn't they start out as mountain climbing shoes and after climbing shoes?
They are rather good though, but bloomin' expensive over here, but I got a pair in blighty for £5 before I came over, admittedly, there "women", but no one can tell, brown opened heel stompers, very comfy...

Hubby bought a pair when he visited me in the UK once, said they were cheaper over there. However we cant keep going back home just to get shoes. We've found the Hush Puppy outlet stores stock Merrell and theyre a wee bit cheaper there. We're errrrrr kinda well known at our local outlet now, they give us some nice lil discounts
And seeing as my secret is out now I own 3 pairs Belluna sandals, 1 pair Primo slides, 2 pairs Tetra slides (red bean and brown), 1 pair VIE shoes, 2 pairs walking boots and ohhh my work baffies which are now out of stock.

I'm amazed that some of you found Merrells cheaper in England! I paid £110 for my Chameleon Ventilators in London, but over here they're about $90....less than half. A friend of mine worked at REI in California so I ended up getting my second pair for $30 with her discount. Bargain!

Try and imagine my horror in going the other direction... While the DAH was wooing me he cleverly checked the size of my (US) undies and bought me the same size in some special bits from the UK..... couldn't understand how I'd gone UP two sizes in the week and half we were apart....
O my.
