I actually disagree. If self employed there are niche practices for travel agents The one I have seen is working for people or groups of, who are to busy and need constant travel arrangements - think celebrities, this would obviously require great networking etc. Alternatively, all the bona fide internet companies still have 'travel consultants.' Vacationstogo.com springs to mind as a company that employs coordinators/consultants so if you have travel agency experience that might suit.

Re: will USA salary support me and my wife?
Hi All, I'm just waiting for my official job offer from the USA, i currently work for a company that are based worldwide, however this is not a job transfer i will quit the UK company (if the offer is good enough) and move to the USA.
So while i await the details i need to know if my hourly will be able to support me and my wife.
I'm hoping initially the company will provide me with an apartment for at least the 1st 12 months.i will probably want to rent after this period for at least the next 12 months after this but wonder if i will be able to manage on just my income.
i'm not too sure what they will offer me but i'm hoping it's somewhere in the region of $28 to $35 per hr plus overtime to which is about 20 to 30 hrs per week.
What are your thoughts?
Thanks

At the low ends of the ranges you cite, you could certainly survive in a lower cost area, but average US income is in the low $40,000s, and depending on your medical insurance plan, you may find your finances very tight. At the upper end of the ranges, life would certainly be easier, but again this would be critically dependent on your healthcare costs.
IMO based on the sketchy information you have supplied, this does not sound like a "golden opportunity", but might be worth taking if you're going to gain experience or if it leads to a better job in future.

At base pay level, the pay level is not too bad for a low-mid cost location, and if the OT is actually available consistently in the middle of the hours and $ ranges, then the money is potentially pretty good for a low- mid cost location. As commented by others this opinion is still critically dependent on the cost of health insurance, and on the consistent availability of the OT.
Sorry for any confusion caused by my previous post based on my misreading of the OP.

no problems - for my part was not trying to be caustic in any way - just offering a different view. I do agree that travel agents have gone away. It is one of the quirky things that always strikes me as odd when I am back in the UK (in a good way) that you actually see high street travel agencies. In 17 years I have never seen an actual travel agents shop in the US - perhaps I am not looking?

And where I am and in the previous town, there have been a indie office, but they tend to have niche kind of travel target, which is Brazilians travelling on the cheap as families or au pairs.

Maybe because Rancho Bernardo was created as an over 55's town, it has three travel agencies - from what I have heard at least 2 of them are red hot on cruise deals !

There are two travel agencies near us (and a couple of driving schools). We availed ourselves of the services of one of the driving schools when teaching our youngest son to drive proved to be too nerve-wracking for us, but I have never been inside the travel agencies. I think they are for people who don't know how to use the interwebs. (Or are afraid the interwebs are full of scammers and fraudsters and thieves).
