For 10 glorious days I had friends and family and a bloody social life...whats one of those! I am seriously wondering what the hell I'm doing here. I've finally put my finger on why here is different. Monday morning I woke up early I was staying with the in laws at their flat which overlooks southsea common. I spent ages watching people and cars and dog walkers go by. And then I just knew that for me England is alive and I feel plugged in. I never feel like that in the US, I feel like I'm in a coma half the time. I meant to post a long account of my trip on the 'Moving back' forum but I cant bring myself to do it at the moment, maybe tomorrow.

Been here nearly 10 years and still keep in contact with most of my mates from back home, many of whom are spread all over the world.
Agree with most of y'all. They act like great mates for a year or two, and then one day, voom, they've moved on to someone else, and don't bother keeping up. I've learned to 'sift' those type of people out, and don't bother. Point in case. We were extremely good friends with someone for at least 7 years of being here. She had a b/day party for her g/son, which we could not attend, so she stopped talking to us, because we didn't drop all plans so we could attend a 1st b/day party. That kind of thing goes on all the time.
I am fortunate to have a few really good friends, who aren't too shocked when I am 'myself' , and whom I've known for many years now. The kind who bring us dinner if I'm down with flu, or will come over and fix up my flowerbeds when we're settling into a new house..etc...real folk.
I am very thankful for them.

There's most of us here feeling like lost souls and me feeling like I need a good cry, then up she pops my mate from back home so I have a big with a lump in my throat.

I get texts from the mates a bit - mostly about footie and I phone them every few months - why should they call me - i'm the one who moved away. But I can tell you this, when I went back they treated me just as they always have and hanging out with true friends is one thing that there is no substitute for (apart maybe heroin, but i've yet to try that ).
If you expect people back home to be calling you every night or visit every week - well that was prob never going to happen and if you no longer regard them as friends because of this just make sure that you're not making a big mistake.
Good luck

Ouch
Not so true any more though, but I do remember the 3rd division days when we could ask the ref to start the game a bit early so we could get the bus home on time

Here you seem to be expected to be in awe of the latest milestone the c-ck waver has passed on his/her way to material nirvana.
By the way, am i the only one who's felt the need to become an anarchist since coming to the us ???
