I can't think of any circumstance under which you can "apply for a green card" because of where your parents were born. The closest I can get to linking that statement to what is actually possible is that you are planning to apply for a green card through the diversity visa program aka "the green card lottery". Are you aware that, unless your parents are from Oceania, the chances of you getting a green card are less than 2% in any one year?

So far as the rest of your questions go, the US is not a great place for anyone who doesn't have qualifications and experience applicable to a skilled or professional job. The US is a very bad place to be on below average income. What is it that you do? What skills and qualifications do you have?

What makes you interested in the US specifically? You might not like the UK and 'fancy a change' but the UK is a lot safer in terms of a welfare system, free healthcare, and the ability to obtain some sort of job even if your qualifications are limited. It would depend on what your qualifications are as to where might be a good place for you to look at moving.

I assumed that was a qualification of some sort.

The US is also a very bad place to try to start over again at age fifty. I'd suggest looking for a different place to live in the EU.

Are you referring to the diversity lottery? You can't really make any decisions about where to live until you are MUCH closer to actually getting the immigrant visa. You could be applying for years and years, never to win the lottery, so doesn't make much sense to figure out where to live and what job to have, as that will change from year to year.

If you are already 50, I suggest not really bothering at all. Too difficult to start over at that age in the USA. Just my opinion.

Do we need a separate thread, move it to the TIO or what?

Not age-ist, real-ist! (And in my case, permitted because I'm in the same glass house!)
