I'd love to see the US follow the European model in this regard, sincerely I would. All I was calling out is that some have good holiday allowance in the US, the difference is that not all do.

Me too.

Re: What are your working hours?

I am salaried - supposed hours are 8-4, but really I work 7:30-5:30 MOST days, until 4:30 occasionally, and until 6:30 often. I am also on call one week every 5 weeks, so for that week, I work whatever is necessary - depends what patients we have, what surgeries are scheduled etc. I seem to be jinxed and get all the drama on my call week.

I often waste time at the end of the day just so I'm not seen to be leaving "early" (read = on time!). There is one guy who leaves at 4:30 on the dot, and he's know as Dr DoLittle... heh.

Having said that, my boss and immediate coworkers are a small group, and we are all very good friends, both in and out of work, except one guy. I couldn't ask for a better boss or more flexibility - they let me out at noon once a week so I can go to class, and if I have an appointment etc they don't mind as long as we have enough coverage in the hospital. I like it.

Salaried. 37.5 hours a week.

Monday - Friday. 8-4.30. Hour lunch.

In June & July it's Tuesday - Friday. 7-5 (4.30 on Friday). Half hour lunch. A 3 day weekend.

15 days vacation (including your 1st year) plus about a week on top of that for Xmas when the place closes down.

A hint for you with these nasty hours etc - look for a job at a university!!!!!!
