[QUOTE=Chrissywissy100;7589497]some companies (and that's not many) expect you to take 30mins for lunch, which you are paid for. QUOTE]

Will vary state to state. In California the 30 minute break was a requirement under state law for full-time employees, and it was unpaid.

(I was always hourly, so laws may differ for management or those on a salary.)

wow...wish they did that in our hotel!!!!

We've also been getting 38 hour schedules so that when we stay late (as we invariably do) it doesn't run into overtime

In reality it is a small business. The vans have to be working and earning not sittin around. But it's not a career. It pays OK for now but as my skill set improves I'll look more seriously at going it alone though may have to wait for some economic improvement to risk that.
Going it alone brings its own problems. No paid vacation or holidays, but to my mind anything is better than a corporate cubicle dweller.

Wish it was the same in my district. Its so incredibly expensive, even to do Group Health (my neighbor calls it Group Death ) for the three of us.

It's a cultural difference.
Personally, I'd prefer if everyone had more time off. It's important for one's mental health, to visit with one's family, to be able to travel, or just to work in one's yard. I'd love to see the US follow the European model in this regard, sincerely I would. All I was calling out is that some have good holiday allowance in the US, the difference is that not all do.

For sure but the rewards are sweeter too one would hope. If I kept the turnover I do for the business I'd be very happy even net of expenses etc.
But I could shut the firm down for 10 days at xmas and it would not be a problem ;-)
It's a dream for now but I'm keeping an open mind.

problems getting decent affordable medical insurance and not being able to claim unemployment for a year if you go under as well as claim any other benefits can be a bit off putting going that route down in Mass...

I could list a 101 things bad about having your own business, but in spite of it, I hope I never have to go the corporate route again.

There's a no smoking policy where I work. Can't even smoke outside, or even in your own car in the parking lot.
Smokers have to leave the building to set themselves on fire.
