What is this 'twitter'?
It seems to be everywhere, on TV, I hear about it on the radio, the editorial in the local paper was all over it.
Is it just another word for texting? or is it something completely different? I know it would be easy enough to google it, but I hoped that the clever people on here would be able to explain it, so that even I can understand this

Its like facebook status updates, but more of them. I can't see the point, but I think its a generation gap thing. And I'm not even that old

140 characters to update your 'status'. Being used by techies as a way of basically text messaging the world at once.
Now being used by more mainstream folks, including
http://twitter.com/DowningStreet
http://twitter.com/BreakingNewsOn (Breaking News)
http://twitter.com/lafd (Los Angeles FireDept)
etc.
I find it is about 20 minutes faster than CNN for breaking news.

I signed up over the weekend, still not sure of whether I'll use it much, people seem to be updating their status constantly so it's like a huge chat program more than a status update. I don't know about the generation thing though, I'm 28 and following Dave Gorman, Jonothan Ross, Robert Llewelyn and Phillip Schofield and they're all older than me yet seem to love it.

I'm a lazy stalker, I rely on my victims telling me what they've done today rather than actually follow them.

Personally, I've never been able to get my head around Twitter. Do people think that their every day ongoings are of any interest to everyone else in the world?
It screams of a level of arrogance that I'm yet to even come close to. I'm on Facebook and my status is frequently left blank for weeks simply because I'm not doing anything really worth telling anyone about. Sure, it's important and interesting to me, but why would I consider that everyone else would be remotely interested in it?
Some of the people who go on there and update their status every few minutes strike me as completely insane... What do they write? Getting up... Scratching butt (Twittering with one hand)... Making a cup of coffee... Updating Twitter... Updating Twitter... Updating Twitter... Contemplating life.
Honestly, I think that if people actually got on with life rather than spending time telling other people about the mundane events in their boring lives they might get a bit more done.

The plane crash in Denver was first reported on Twitter by a passenger in real time. And that famous photo of the plane in the Hudson was circulated on Twitter.
