I'd also suggest an oven glove. I actually had my in-laws bring me one as I couldn't adjust to using a single mitt. :p

My US friends laughed at my double gloved oven mitts.. they think they are hilarious! Well how else am I supposed to get the cast iron and enamel dishes out the oven.. thats definitely not a one handed job!:o

Nice duvets can be found at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Pottery Barn IMO sells the best covers and they frequently go on sale - if it's too expensive wait a few weeks and it will be on clearance.

so what did people do with personal items? im not bringing furniture (not even my duvets! - good idea though...)

i only want to bring personal stuff, photos, small collection of stuffed toys odd items of jewelery, random small items. my 2 Nikon cameras and lenses etc

the biggest thing i want to bring is my computer and flat screen monitor. i have the original boxes for them.

I dont seem to have much stuff, but more then i can probably take as luggage on the plane.

what did other people do with personal stuff?

Tricky huh? We're moving a bit more than you by the sounds of it. We have a total of about 200cf. (A medium sized moving box is about 3cf.) Clothes, shoes, guitar, snowboards, golf clubs, biggish TV, computer stuff, books, CDs, video game console, pictures, plates, cutlery, glasses, our mattress (don't ask,) and so on. It's going to cost about £2000 including packing, unpacking, insurance and fees to move it from Edinburgh to San Francisco by boat, and it'll take between 9 and 12 weeks!

I think it's pretty hard to come in any lower than that when moving personal goods with a shipping company.

You should find out what it costs to take an extra suitcase on the plane, that would probably be the easiest and cheapest way to bring everything along. Some airlines will let you take a dozen suitcases, but you have to pay for each one past the second.

And you should have bought a laptop ;-)

Hey - we're flying United too, though checking the kitty in the hold. We're connecting through from Aberdeen, and a bit concerned about the cat transfer logistics. We also have a newborn, but we're not checking her.

If you are willing to pay the extra-bag charge you can almost certainly check your computer. Just put it in it's original box and tape it up well. I see people do this all the time, especially the flights arriving in San Francisco from Asia. People travel with their rice cookers.

Computer I can see. At least desktop PCs usually have a switch to change them from 220 to 110V, and Macs have an autoswitching power supply. Still have to switch the mains cords to American ones or use adapters.

Monitor? Why?

It may well turn up earlier, ours took 6 weeks rather than estimated 12.. and that was London to SFO.

Personal stuff in suitcase, or wrapped up and shipped over, don't know if you have that option now though.

The computer, unless it really is the dogs knackers, take the hard drive out and sell it, cheaper and less hassle to get new over here same with the monitor.
