I miss the UK half & half - a curry with half chips and half rice

Decent curries can be had here, I'm sure CA is no different. Maybe next time I go to the Indian I'll ask if they can do me an order of chips to go with my rice

I do so much prefer the order at the bar and get your own drinks self service used in the UK

Although now I'm getting older I do struggle to remember what everyone wants when going up to order, often end up going back to get the friggin table number

Exactly!! Vive la difference & all that. Why always compare one narrow aspect of one country (quality of restaurant service, cost of a sandwich, etc.) with another in order to continually total up which one comes out "best"...? They're different, & always will be.

If you like the US better, you can write up a pro & con list that reflects that very easily. If you miss the UK & hate the US, your list will naturally show that UK bias. But that doesn't help anyone else but the list-maker, who already probably knows which country s/he likes better.

That said, I'll be back to UK for the first time in 5 years in June, so watch me eat my words.
I'll go back for the first time in two years soon. I'm wondering if that's a mistake--is the going back & forth what causes this mental compulsion that one country must "win" over the other?

I'm the OP and my thread was meant as a bit of lighthearted fun....there are also circumstances which have nothing to do with missing uk which make some people go back and forth

3 Seeing family and being back in my dear late mams house
4 The absence of high fructose corn syrup in food - and good old plain food- Weetabix Ive missed you!!!
5 Toby Carvery - enough said
6 Public transport- the best bus, train and tube system

Not loving
1 The cold weather up north - where I live in US is similar weather BUT we have lots and lots more blue skies - its not warm for me in US but in the north here its freezing!
2 - the grey clouds ALL the time
3 The cost of food!!!! 2 small salads - teeny tiny - a bread roll and 2 teeny fruit salads - nearly £30 in a dept store!!!!! really!!!
4 The service - enough said!!!! or rather lack of is so noticeable after US - I WANT to be asked if I found everything ok - I want someone to tell me to have a beautiful day and to take care out there - I want to be asked if I need help taking my shopping to my car and most of all I don't want to pack my own groceries!!!
5 -wheres the water with my meals?????? why when I ask for some do I get a glass of luke warm tap water!!!!!!!
6 - the price of clothes!

Ive only been here a few days so to be continued!!!!
I was back recently also (a month in total 2 weeks on my own then 2 weeks with my wife/son) and have a similar list!

There are things I love about both places. I love looking at houses (sad I know) and was in shock at what your money gets you in the SE these days... I actually don't think prices have changed that much since I left, just my perspective as I live in Houston and you get a LOT of house for your money here...!

If only we could combine the best of both countries...!

I assumed at least some of your visits had to do with illness in the family, CADreaming, as I thought I remembered you posting about that. But I did wonder if--for whatever reason an expat returns to the homeland--the more trips there are back & forth between the homeland and the expat country, the more the mind would tend to compare & contrast the two. Maybe it's just the way expat minds work.

My feeling was that your list was light-hearted food for thought, and my comments are too, really. I think we're all very lucky to be able to travel, and to know two different countries well enough to compare them in detail the way we do....

Put another way.
I like the UK but I realise I like the democracy of the US (running for cover) and other things that I would have to give up.

Democracy of the US? You mean how you can vote for who you like and the country goes in the exact same direction, same as it did in the UK?
