What have I forgot?
Hi All,
I have my visa and am gearing up to move to NJ in the next 6-8 weeks. I am just looking for any advice on issues people wish they could have addressed or looked into before they left. I am in discussions with IAS about a car, have set up an USD account with CITI which I can at least link my debit card too in the short term. Have found an apartment, just waiting on paperwork to go through. Healthcare will be sorted by my employer... I feel like I have most bases covered - but any help/pointers on areas I could easily have overlooked would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |
Re: What have I forgot?
Potential for tax rebate from Inland Revenue, you could look into it.
Have you cancelled any insurance policies? Nothing left on auto debit, no outstanding bills? Keep your UK bank/building acct open if you can. You sound well prepped. What will you be doing? |
Re: What have I forgot?
Would probably help if you mention whether you're moving permanently or temporarily (btw, welcome!).
Visit friends, cancel utilities/phone/TV/internet etc (if applicable), decide what to take on the plane vs what to send on the slow boat (if applicable), last curry, you got (temporary) health insurance from the day you arrive until employer coverage kicks in (might be a month or two)... etc. |
Re: What have I forgot?
Thanks for this - I am actually heading out for 4 weeks from mid November to get the apartment furnished, pick up the car and get various other wheels in motion. The plan is to then head back to the UK for a few weeks and tie up the loose ends here, which will involve selling cars, cancelling policies and leaving my flat with an agent to get rented - then out for good early Jan.
I will be working for an Aviation Company at Teterboro Airport NJ, it's a satellite office of our UK firm and it needs expanding... hopefully that's where I come in. |

This is our big list of things to do prior to a move. Take a look as there might be something you forgot.

Where can you get temporary health insurance? That's something I need to sort out.
Just note, the coverage will be crap but it's better than nothing. Make sure you're either covered by your employer within 63 (?) days or that the temporary insurance constitutes "prior credible coverage". <-- Question to others: is that still relevant since Obamacare? |
