For qualified consultants, yes I disagree. If I do the 7 yr sub-speciality training that I want to do in the USA, I'll be starting on $350K once the 7 yrs are up. The UK people would be starting on £70K

Trainee docs in the UK earn more than trainees in the US.

This is actually true, to some extent. It's not the norm though

It really depends on what specialty a doctor is in.

I know of someone in the UK with LOADS of forensic nursing experience, and family (general) practice nursing experience, who has been offered a consultant post once she has completed one year's foundation programme training. ie she trained to be a nurse, worked as a nurse, continued to work as a nurse while training at uni to be a doc, is now doing her intern year.

Bit disingenous this.... no one is disputing that specialists make a LOT more in the US than in the UK. Those in family practise, especially those just starting out, do not make more if you factor in the customary med school debt and costs of malpractice insurance.

Every country needs, and uses, primary care physicians much more than they do specialists. The huge gap between PCP pay and specialist pay in the US means we get more specialists than we need and fewer PCPs. This is not only a problem with respect to the costs of health care in general, it's a problem because there's a shortage of PCPs.

They were also disputing the average doctor salary at one point, not just GP.

Do we have to drag that discussion into this (or any other) thread?

Seemed realated - was about salaries. I would hope the whole thing wouldn't be repeated - just wondered what an actual doctor who seemed to know thought salaries are.

Eventually, there has to come a time when every single post on every thread will be about the US/UK healthcare debate.
Can we hurry up and get it over with, so that we can get back to the recipe for decent Yorkshire puddings?

I can make good Yorkshire puddings - and I'm not even from Yorkshire (which I'm told is a requirement)

(presuming you don't actually need a recipe)

Check your karma.

I like the friendly attitude that I seem to find everywhere I go in the USA.

I like the SoCal sunny weather.

I love the fact that we live a mile from the beach one way, and a less than a mile from a country-like walk.

I love the fact that the place feels like "home" - much more so than the UK ever has.

I love the variety in the supermarkets and coupons!!

I love the cheapness.....it generally costs us $1 each to go to the movies.

I don't like the fact that I can't buy a small back of crisps/chips.

I don't like the fact that many people seem to have to have the latest gadget/widget/gizmo.

LOL come visit me, we'll have a cook-off.

Of course, it'll be my luck that for the first time I'll make ones flat as pancakes.
