What to do in LA for 6 hrs 45 mins?
That's the amount of time between our arrival in LA and our departure to New Zealand. I don't think we'll have to claim our baggage and re-check it, but even if we do, that won't take too long.
We have a 5 1/2 year old daughter. No real desire to rent a car for that amount of time. 2 hour check-in (probably) for New Zealand.
Should we even attempt to do anything between flights, or is it just best to hang around the airport? What's there to do there at the airport, anything?

Get a hotel room and get drunk probably would be the best...you'll probably have to do luggage claim and check in again, there fun like that over here...and have fun

certainly would not suggest leaving the terminal. Be a bitch to miss your flight. There will be plenty of eateries and stores to window shop in. The time will go faster than you think. Or not.

See, a bunch of the Brits on here that go for their recce trips to New Zealand obviously go from the UK. And they stop in Singapore. Some stay there for a couple of days, it's so great there, apparently! And yes I do mean just at the airport. There are free massages, a swimming pool, if memory serves, tons of stuff to do! Actually with all that, yep we probably would miss our onward flights!
I just look at the differences between Terminal 5 - the international terminal - at O'Hare, and Terminal 4 at Heathrow, which in comparison has a shitload of stuff to at least window-shop for, and a ton of really nice eateries... I don't suppose there's any remote chance that LAX is like LHR in that respect...

Unlikely that you will have to pick up baggage as it will be in transit but if not then it could take you nearly all that time to pass customs! Bloody nightmare in the USA and can take an age to pass through. If you don't have to do it then stay in the terminal.

LAX is a dive, always busy, massively overcrowded, expensive for everything (McD's for 4 = $50) and to top it off they regularly screw up.
have fun maz.
