What car?

So, taking my next poll from the discussion of my last poll again:

What do we ex-pats tend to drive?

...and why don't I just get it over with and invite you all to tell me why the categories in my poll are wrong for starters, eh? :)

dbj1000 Jun 16th 2004 1:36 am

...and before you all tell me what an idiot I am (because I know that already!) I know that many of the "European" brands are owned by the big "Domestic" brands, and I know that many "Japanese" cars are more domestic than a Ford, but what the hell, they're categories that kind of work!

:)

dbj1000 Jun 16th 2004 1:38 am

...and for those of you with two or more cars... get over it! Just pick one already!

sibsie Jun 16th 2004 1:49 am

I drive my husband's Caprice Classic. The windows don't wind down, the rear doors are buggers to open, the radio doesn't work and it's crap in the snow.

I love it!:p

I have a a Dodge Neon and my partner has a Ford Focus.
Both pretty nice, compact cars that don't guzzle too much gas.....oops............ :scared: ............. I mean petrol!!!!!!!!!

I've got a Ford Escort, not the most exotic thing to drive, but it's got more gadgets than anything I drove back home.

snorkmaiden Jun 16th 2004 2:45 am

We bought a used Plymouth Grand Voyager Rally(which as far as I can gather is essentially a Chrysler). It was a repo and it seems we got a really great deal.

We have four kids and get a lot of family visitors so the space is great for us.

Plus, when I was furniture shopping it was invaluable. I took out the seats and managed to get a king size bed and two twin beds in it, and there was my husband saying I'd have to get them delivered :D

So far, apart from the normal maintenance things it's been great.

We've got a Toyota Highlander and a Honda Accord. Would love to get a Nissan Titan truck when the Accord croaks, anyone got one of them?

Rob, did you see "Pimp My Ride" today on MTV, the kid was driving a cut and shut Escort? Or is it just me that watches PMR?

Nice-looking car Pat!

As for me, I'm more than happy with my VW Bug - nice little mover and perfect for around here! :D It doesn't guzzle the gas like all these big cars and trucks do - very fuel efficient.
Hubby enjoys driving it too, on the odd occasion I let him!!

Jan Alaska Jun 16th 2004 11:37 am

An old Dodge Grand Caravan, drivers door is rusted through, rear wiper / demister doesnt work, heat decided to work just as the snow melted, seats about 20 plus dogs, ohhh and doesnt do much more than 40 mph so is very frugal on gas.

time for a new(er) car methinks

We had one of those. The transmission disintegrated with no warning. Yours seems to have hung in there though.

ladyofthelake Jun 16th 2004 12:40 pm

A Ford Explorer which leaks transmission fluid everywhere, plus a remote key fob and CD player which don't work anymore.
Also a crappy Chevy Cavalier, which is still under manufacturers warranty but is in the garage again today, the second time in a month.

Hubby recently bought me a 2002 Ford Explorer for my birthday, I am delighted with it! Ladyofthelake, what year is yours? I have heard of a lot of people having transmission problems with Explorers. Keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't happen to mine ......

My stepson got me interested in Pimp my ride. I loved the one where they pimped up the yoga teacher's Land cruiser.

I was a bit disappointed to learn that you have to be between 18-22 years old to appear on the show! :( :(

That's my husband's car! As you can tell me and him outdoors are really into cars!

His now as 150k on the clock and seems to be getting lower to the ground every day but he still reckons he can get a few more miles out of it.

Meanwhile my grandfather in law, who's 98 just got a new Lexus. We asked him why he bothered with a brand new one and he said "well I want it to last"!

Probably not. Have had problems with tire wear too. Had new ball ends or whatever they're called put on, but the ride is still a bit bumpy. Is it the norm for tires to wear out quicker here? Is everyone in the same boat?

Andy, I love your truck!

This is my pride and joy:

TexasPenguin Jun 16th 2004 5:45 pm

Hey, Rockgirl, thanks! (All my friends and relatives in England cast me as single-handedly destroying the ozone layer with the beast!).

To be honest I got so fed up with buyinig things like refrigerators, paving slabs, wood, etc. etc. and getting the "bring y'alls truck round back and we'll load it for yer" comment (when all I had was a Taurus) that.... well that was the excuse I gave the misus anyway :D .

Like the Union Jack on the licence plate, Rockgirl. Not legal to do that in Texas though :(

Andy.

It seems original equipment tyres (sic!) are usually pretty crappy here (mine kicked the bucket in about 25,000 miles) but, I was amazed to get a 75,000 mile warranty on new tyres for both my beast and my daughter's CRV.
Big thing to make sure is the alignment (what we know as 'tracking'). If this is off (and it often is even on new cars) then the tyres will go West in pretty quick time.

Andy.

I was going to answer import, but then I remembered my parents initially had faith in American built cars and bought a new station wagon. They soon learned not to buy any American vehicle and bought new imports instead.

dbj1000 Jun 16th 2004 10:26 pm

Heh! Nice to see that we Brits are doing our bit for the environment by driving small vehicles!

I'll stick to my nice little VW Golf (which often feels like the smallest damned car on the Texas roads!!).

...and to balance that out, our other car is a 1999 Chrysler Town & Country weighing something like 3 tonnes and boasting a bloody great V6 to drag it around :)

Photo was taken with a really crappy polaroid....

Yeah I was surpised at how much I liked the Santa Fe when we were shopping for a new vehicle... We also looked at the Kia Sorrento and a Land Rover Free Lander out of the 3 both my husband and I prefered the Santa Fe. Handled nicely through the winter too

Ash :)
