With all the house building going on in the UK has anyone heard of a new reservoir being built?

I think you have hit the nail on the head Tony. Most of the UKs water infrastructure is very old (so it leaks - a lot) and was planned for a much smaller population of houses, each using much less water than the average modern family.

Throw is a couple of dry months and you've got a major shortage since the necessary reserves are too small.

Possibly - but when was the last ban? And it has been a hot summer over there? There are even bans in part of Dallas at the moment!

Re: UK ... lack of investment in water infra-structure, cutting corners, failing to fix leaks, etc. Having once worked in the industry one picks up on things like that even after leaving for fresh pastures. There once was a water company who put down a long length of water supply pipe and did not bury it to the prescribed depth to avoid ground frost issues. Came a hard winter and the pipe suffered numerous fractures producing very big leaks.

California has been stealing more than its agreed share from the Colorado River for years.

Santa Fe has had water restrictions for some years. Includes no planting of new grass, no washing cars at home, watering gardens only every second day, etc. Sprinklers are not common here. I'm waiting to see the next level of restrictions, which includes banning hotels from changing sheets and towels more than once in four days for guests staying more than one night. Gonna be hell to pay on that one.

People really do over water the garden......I put one can of water over the few flowers I have......and all my little trees and bushes have to wait tilll it rains......and I've yet to lose one.....

The same goes for my FL house....my grass is just as green as the locals who water a lot longer than I do......I can't believe some of the water bills they get......

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - In a continuing effort to save money, hotel chains are changing sheets for their customers less frequently, sometimes only weekly, according to a published report Tuesday.

USA Today reported that hotel chains are savings millions of dollars by reducing their changes of sheets. New guests all get new sheets, according to the report, but those with extended stays will no longer see the daily sheet changes that used to be industry standard, the paper said.

"It's a growing industry trend," Steve Samson, an executive with Marriott International, the world's largest hotel chain, told the paper. Marriott's more upscale, full-service hotels began switching to every three days earlier this year, the paper reports.

Privately-held Global Hyatt Corp. went from changing each guest's sheets daily to every four days last year, according to the paper.

Some leading chains, including Holiday Inn, do not have uniform policies on sheet changes across the chain, according to a survey of companies by the paper. Some lodging companies, including Sheraton, Westin and St. Regis, all owned by Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, still make daily sheet changes.

The paper said that hotels are explaining the move as an effort to be more environmentally friendly, using less hot water, detergents and bleach to clean sheets. But the hotels see savings from less laundry and reduced labor costs.

The paper said that most hotels are willing to change sheets daily for any customer who requests it. Samson told the paper about 5 to 7 percent of guests make that requests, although that varies by hotel.

About 15 percent of the guests at one Marriott in California request a daily linen change, while only 2 percent at a nearby site do, the paper said. :scared:
