Hello!
This is my first response thingy! -- I have been here since September.. in NJ...
I echo the person who thought Waitrose was moving here...
Wholefoods as others have mentioned is a good place to start..but can be pricey
Most Markets are good for the everyday stuff... you might find it hard to find good meats... I know I have.. And some of the 'Fresh Veg' is worse than I have seen on travels in Africa!!! -- It's a case of trying things out.. and looking more closely at veg and stuff than you did in UK..
I dream of Tesco Pork and Apple Sausages! (sorry if you are a vegetarian!)

the place behind the mall next to chucke cheese is a good little brewery too, as is the place in bangor on the water front...

well yes, that kids festering pedo joint is a bit off, but the brew pub next door is pretty nice, but I can never remember what it's called, they have a fantastic autumn and summer brew though, even liked the honey one they did last year.

are you sure you're not thinking of Wild Oats?
maybe true but they could try to be crapper than everyone else... although Albertson's will still have them licked so yeah, maybe they won't ever open over here.

In the city of San Francisco itself, to start there are three Whole Foods Market stores:
Whole Foods California Street
Whole Foods Potrero Hill (the newest)
Whole Foods South of Market
Whole Foods Market is similar to Waitrose in many; there are differences as well. But, you will want to check them out and do some shopping there.
Another "Waitrose like" supermarket is Andronico's Market in San Francisco's Inner Sunset neighborhood. You can find the address online. Here is there website: www.andronico's.com
here is Whole Foods website:
www.wholefoods.com
Additionally: There is a smaller (by U.S. standards) upscale independent grocery store called Cal-Mart. It's in a place called Laura Village in San Francisco. Just ask; nearly everybody in SF can tell you where it is.
There also is another small, upscale store called Mollie Stones Market. It's right of California Street in SF. There website is: www.molliestones.com
You also will want to check out the Ferry Plaza Marketplace at the Ferry building on the waterfront in SF. It's a european-style market with tons of vendors who sell local, organic, gourmet, ect. ect. foods. There also is an ongoing farmers market there as well. They have it all. Nice people-watching as well.
Further, there are a number of very upscale supermarkets in the Waitrose mol near the city of San Francisco.
These include:
>Draegers in Downtown San Mateo. www.draegers.com
>The new Whole Foods Market European Market Hall store in downtown Oakland, which is just across the Bay Bridge from San Francisco.
>Lunardi's. www.lunardies.com
>Cosentino's. www.cosentino's.com
and many others.
Also, San Francisco has numerous gourmet stores. There also is a major import market in the Richmond District. It sells lots of British foods. Just ask around for what you want--especially at a bar or pub or cafe--as people in San Francisco love telling others where they can find this type of food and such.
Another thing is in the spring and summer there are dozens of Farmers markets in and around San Francisco. These are a must shop...fresh, variety, seasonal.
I write a blog about Tesco's Fresh & Easy grocery store venture in the U.S. SO far the stores are in Southern California, Arizona and Nevada. However, they will open 18 Fresh & Easy stores to start at the end of this year or early next year in the Bay Area. I have nothing to do with Tesco..no business realtionships. Just do the blog along with another called Natural Specialty Foods Memo. Links:

Enjoy!

Just tried Fresh and Easy down here in Eagle Rock near Pasadena for the first time the other day (generally frequent Trader Joe's, Whole Foods and Ralph's) and I was fairly surprised at how good it was. Self scan, lots of prepared stuff like sandwiches and meals ready to go - delightful limejuice - and lots of stuff like spicy pork bangers, stir fry stuff, etc. Me and the Mrs. will deffo be going back soon.
The things I am always looking for a reliable source for are HP sauce and salt and vinegar Hula Hoops. Oh, and Double Deckers and Maltesers, although these are usually found more regularly in the English stores adjacent to the many English pubs.
One thing I sort of half remembered - OP is up in SF - there is the absolute best burrito place there in the Mission - they sell jars of their sauce. If you can find it from my admittedly crap clues, you won't regret it. I think they make it with crack or something - it's that good. Brother in law used to live there - if he comes online I'll ask him the name of the place and post here.
good luck with your Waitrose-a-like search.
