I will be visiting Canada in July for 1 week going across the border. I am a LPR and have GC.
Will I need my passport also? I have a UK passport. Does this get stamped at the crossing back into US?

Take your passport just in case, although I don't think you need it.

I'm an LPR and travel (usually by land) to Canada 2 to 3 times per year. The Canadians always asked for both passport and GC. The US side did stamp my passport on the return on my most recent visit (April) but can't remember about previous times.

I cross the Peace Bridge every day
there are big signs up saying from
June 1st
passports
nexus
passport cards
enhanced drivers licenses
will only be accepted.
you'll need the GC to show proof of residency obviously.
so yes, you'll need your passport too when you go.

Hi everyone!
First of all, despite being a member for a while now I have never posted before, but would like to thank you all for the laughter, tears and great advice this site provides!
I too am a victim of the passport police in Washington. Sent my application in just before the processing times changed. I am travelling to Canada by land on June 2nd. I called the Canadian border patrol and they assured me that I would be allowed in with my GC only. However, there is so much conflicting advice out there........I will try to chase my passport through the consulate here in Houston, but if it isn't here, should I go as planned anyway with just GC? Has anyone actually been turned away doing this?
Any advice appreciated.

Most of the time....
The other day I got a real miserable Canadian border guard. She was properly intense (on a side note, she was a total babe).
Meanwhile the US guy on the way back was super nice. While in general the Canadian guards are super friendly, one or two of them can be difficult.
So, I think the prudent thing is to be properly armed with appropriate documentation for both of them.

I find that bringing some smarties back from Canada and leaving them on your dash board usually helps (for some reason the US border guards i used to come across on my monthly shopping trips over to Canada and back loved smarties!!)

LPRs do not need a passport to get back into the US or to enter Canada.

"What other documents will be acceptable?
Passports are the document of choice because of
security features and internationally accepted
standards for international travel. However, other
acceptable travel documents to enter the United
States when traveling by air are U.S. Coast Guard
Merchant Mariner’s Document, NEXUS Air Card or
U.S. Permanent Resident Card."
