I've already been down this route. I visited two local DMV offices and then rang the central DMV registry in Richmond. After several phone calls, I made a formal complaint and one of the office managers called me back requesting copies of my UK ID documents so that my case could be considered on its individual merits (though from what I've heard, my case is by no means unique). This was over a month ago and since then and despite leaving dozens of voicemail messages, I have heard nothing. I'll keep chasing them up but she did indicate that the likelihood of success isn't great so I'm not holding out much hope.

Looks like the EAD may be my only option :-(

Thanks anyway to all who replied

Ah, if you got in on a blanket, then you must work for a largish firm, whose attorneys are surely able to help you out with this.

I agree with this. That's what I had to do to get my CA licence renewed. The drones at the counter usually know F'all - and most don't care...

....I've now passed this onto the attorneys so lets hope so. If and when I find a solution I'll pass it on because this does seem to be a common problem.
