Virginia Dreams??

Re: Virginia Dreams??
Thought so, it was the 'sought after location' that gave it away! Head 10/15 mins towards the Hampshire border, out among the farms (there's 6 on our road alone!), and that's where we are so really close to you. Hubby commutes from Wokingham or Fleet every day.

True, but I'm not in Arizona or New Mexico. My patch is mostly covered in trees, with deer, squirrels, raccoons, rabbits, box turtles, groundhogs, chipmunks, moles, frogs, toads, salamanders, bluebirds, cardinals, and numerous other birds, and at least four species of snake. I've even seen crayfish despite having no permanent water feature on my property. In addition to the variety of deciduous and pine trees, I also have a range of toadstools and other fungus. Watching nature "happen" in my back yard is not meaningless.
When we lived in the UK there was a river at the bottom of our garden. There was something different to see everyday...pheasants, quail, partridge, guinea fowl, newts, frogs, woodpeckers, buzzards, sparrowhawks, ducks, tawny owls, badgers, foxes, geese, bats, herons, cormorants, kingfishers, water voles, squirrels, hedgehogs.

Same here plus foxes and possums, turkey vultures but I suppose they come under the bird category. Haven't seen crayfish.

I forgot about bears and coyotes. Saw 2 coyotes at the side of the house just after we moved in.

There was bugger all wildlife in our back yesterday, other than my son and I having way too much fun burning leaves

There is so much going on that I have my own enforcement agent - a feisty cat called Stubby (born with almost no tail), who is in charge of "applied ecology". In other words she kills any rodents, reptiles, and amphibians she finds near the house before the snakes find them. .... Since we got her snakes have been conspicuous by their absence immediately around the house!

Our cat would just sit and watch the snakes eat the mice. If she ever does get out, all she does is just sit and look back in through the windows she usually stares out of ...

You need to adjust her hunting instinct control. .... A modest cut back in her meal size usually does the trick!

Re: Virginia Dreams??
My current dogs are total wusses and don't go after anything. In the past I had a dog that caught an opossum and brought it into the living room (where it played dead until we'd got it outside), killed and brought home a large raccoon and was ticked that we wouldn't let her bring it indoors, and in the process of catching and killing a skunk got her son sprayed though she was untainted. She also once devoured a small turtle while making the most ghastly crunching noises. My favorite was another dog who enjoyed hunting -- she caught a snake one time and I found her waving it around her head like a lasso with a frog firmly jammed into the snake's gullet. She finally cost the snake his lunch as the frog flew out and lived to tell the tale.
