You misunderstand. This 90 day visit program is called the Visa Waiver Program -- it means that for citizens of specific countries (including the UK), the need for a visa is waived.

It must have been a very long time ago, because I've been in this forum for 13 years and it's always been a 90-day visa free program (hence the name VWP...Visa Waiver Program...the visa requirement is waived). And it's still the VWP, it just now needs ESTA pre-clearance.

So if there ever was an actual visa needed for a 90-day trip, it was more than 13 years ago.

Before I got a green card I also visited the US a number of times. Each visit permitted a stay of 90 days, and the visits were under the "Visa Waiver Program" (VWP). You might want to research what "waiver" means, because the VWP is most certainly not a visa.
ESTA isn't a visa either, it is the Electronic System for Travel Authorization, but while it gives you some comfort about your admissibility into the US it is in no sense "a visa". In fact there are treaties between countries that govern which countries' citizens can travel without visas, and if the US had implemented an electronic visa system it would have breached the treaties.

In any case ESTA did not replace the VWP, ESTA supplemented the VWP with a prescreen check. ESTA was implemented to support the VWP, not replace it.

IIRC the VWP was implemented around 1987-88.

Many people in the uk call visa waiver programme which was handed to you on a the plane to fill in before you landed a 90 day tourist visa.
Some airline companies also called this a 90 day tourist visa, my wife works for the airline company for 34 years they called it the same since I knew her !
