Using UK Apple devices in the USA

A few months I decided to ditch my phone contract. So I bought an iPhone outright. I also have a relatively new Macbook Pro.

Can I use these in the States?

Re: Using UK Apple devices in the USA

The phone will work on the main networks with a new SIM card. Most US networks now use LTE (upgrade from GSM) technology like the UK does.

Does the MacBook have a phone service connection too (I don't know anything about MacBooks, and have never owned any iGadget)? .... It will work anyway, but you'll need a new power/charger cord with a US plug on the end. It will work on 120v or 240v without any sort of transformer.

Ooooh Goody, that's good news.

Apple has it wrapped up. My phone and computer work together seemlessly. I can accept phonecalls on my Mac even when I don't have my phone at hand. Photos, iTunes, iCloud just seem to sync without effort. I'm not techie so I don't know how. Photos I take on my phone just arrive on my computer, I love it. I'd be stuck without them now.

Re: Using UK Apple devices in the USA

Yes, they are international - I took my UK iphone and macbook to the US and returned with a US iPad and iMac. I travel a bit for business so got myself a Mac travel kit as the prong part of the power bricks are interchangeable, I got it over 7 years ago and am still using it. I just got a new kettle lead for the iMac on my return and it's fine.

If you're not going to travel much, just get a new power adapters when you get there. All the power units in are suitable for 110 - 220v, so using your UK ones + travel adapter to plug in to the US sockets will work fine.

To whom?

Explain please. This makes no sense on its own!

What was referred to is Handoff, which is based in Apple's (mediocre) Cloud. Apple has never been able to do anything remotely decent with Cloud, so I find it a little inaccurate for the OP to state that Apple has it 'wrapped up', especially where Cloud is relevant.

As far as I can tell the OP just meant that she is going to bring her iGadgets with her and carry on using them, not any technical meaning of "wrapped up" that you are inferring.

They meant that the way MacOS and iPhone works means they have it 'wrapped up' is how I interpreted it.

So Horace, you're making sweeping damning statements about something of which you don't even know the proper name! Based on experience or something you read on the internet?

As it happens, I am fully aware of the correct name. It is you who thinks that 'Continuity' is the name applied to the specific service offered to which the OP was referring (Handoff).

To even attempt to dispute that Apple is lacklustre in Cloud demonstrates a woeful lack of awareness to this market.

LOL, don't worry, you have to pick your side with this lot when it comes to the important matters in life like Apple v Windows and Top Loaders v Front Loaders.

I am an Apple FanGirl - I don't need to know 'how' my tech works just that it does. We are a 2 macbook, 4 ipad, 3 iphone, 2 apple tv family. I'm usually one generation behind everyone as I get The Dudes hand me downs when he upgrades but I just bought myself an iphone 7plus in Rose Gold and I'm as happy as a pig in the proverbial :p

Cab you show me where I said that? It looks like pure fiction to me!

...and yes, as an Apple Advisor, I have a complete lack of awareness!

You won't be able to use the US app store until you signup with a US credit card. There were some quirky things with regards to regions on my iPad, when I used to own one.

You will have to get used to switching between UK and US keyboards.

I don't know if you can moved your existing app store account from the UK to US.

you can - I moved my iTunes account from the UK to the US and back to the UK again by registering my new address and country specific credit card.

Good point. If he likes jazz, I imagine he is too arthritic to do much house work.

Or some such similar excuse.

Actually, that's unfair. He does wash and iron his shirts - he doesn't trust me with those. The same as he doesn't trust me around his turntable. So I just plug my iTunes into his music centre ....er rack, I mean :hehe: and upset him another way.

Re: Using UK Apple devices in the USA

Im pretty sure that if you move from one app store to another, whileit all works, you lose the apps you paid for in the old country. Not normally a big cost issue, but i seem to recall this happened to me. For the record, apple devices are imho just so much friendlier than android and microsoft os's. They just work seamlessly. The only addition is - if you are serious about word processing or spreadsheets, accept no substitute, microsoft office 365 is it...

it didn't happen to me, but then I sync my iPad and iPhone with my iMac and they were all backed up.

The solution is to have a new account for your new residency linked to a credit card issued in said new country. You can swap between the accounts easily, and thus keep access to both stores (which you almost certainly will need).

Re: Using UK Apple devices in the USA

If any of your iDevices are under warranty, you'll be pleased to learn that Apple's warranty (unlike almost every other electronics and camera maker) is truly global.

If the device was purchased in the UK, an Apple Store in the USA will provide warranty service as if the device was purchased locally.

Re: Using UK Apple devices in the USA

I went through this when I moved - There's lots of articles online about itunes/app store.

This is the best one:
https://www.jordanmerrick.com/posts/...order-control/

Long story short
a) you can't transfer purchases
b) you can only move stores once every 90 days
c) The apps/ music/ films etc you buy in the store are licensed to the country. So if you change store from UK to US etc they will not appear in your new store.

So ok for films/ music you can download to your hard drive then re-add to the new library - sync to your devices.

Apps are harder. Some you can retain on your phone - but they will not update.

I've been in the US 2 years now and I still retain my UK store on the phone and macs.

So, I wasn't inaccurate with the term I used? Good, glad we've cleared that up.

Try sticking to helping simpletons with their devices rather than picking fights with those who know better than you.

Has Apple made any washing machines, this is the key question here.

If they did, they would be very shiny, probably be side loaders just to be different, and would have an incomprehensible menu written in a private language on the dials and knobs.
