USC... SSA & CoN - a cautionary tale!

There, how's that? I moved it & left a re-direct. The people in the visa forum can see the headline and click through to here.
And the rest of you rabble.. get down to the SSA! How many times do I have to tell you!
(we, like most people, did go down there and update but never verified it... sigh, always one more thing to do!)

My OH faced something almost identical Ian. He was natz. in Sept. 2008, and a few weeks later we both went into the SSA to update the info. Fast forward to Mar/Apr 2009 when he was filling out his paperwork for his FAFSA renewal. His school sent him a doc stating that they needed proof of his natz. because SSA didn't show him as being a USC. Well, he then called the SSA on their 1-800 number to find out what the issue was, and they told him that he was in the system as a USC. He's changed schools a few times since 2009, and every time he updates the FAFSA to reflect the new school code, the school always asks for the natz. cert. His current school has now asked for the same thing again for his 2010 renewal and for the life of us we don't understand why since SSA tells us he shows up as a USC and given we gave them a copy last school year.

Ok, well apologies (as have had a couple tonight) but as I understand this thread (maybe)...Am I supposed to do something extra, apart from doing the oath thing and getting my USC? Just out of curiosity, what happens if I don't?

You need to inform SSO of your change of status from LPR to USC...it could affect your benefits in future years.

Ian, thanks for sharing.
Like you, I became a USC & sent off for Passport same day, few days later went to SSO, in NYC. Nope never received a new card, they told me, keep original.
Now in Florida. Guess I better go check, go early beat the masses.
Last time I went to our local office, Ft Lauderdale, there was a motley crew. I was the only English speaking person, 2 legs, 2 arms, 2 eyes & teeth.
"Walked with a lisp & talked with a limp"
Better bring the Magnum 44.

Ps. I know, can't get pass the scanner with a gun.

Hubby and I were at the SS office just after 9.00 am this morning...left 1 hour later with letters of confirmation. Our new SS cards will be mailed in approx 2 weeks.
A big thank you to Ian for reminding me about this. It's something I've been meaning to get sorted out for 2 1/2 years....now it's done and dusted.

Well, to follow up with this... I received my "new" SS card in the mail yesterday. I got that "goosebumpy" feeling when I saw the new card... a bit like I did 12 years ago when I got the original one!
It really is a good feeling!
