Re: USA: West Coast Vs East Coast

I lived in San Fran for around a year '94-'95 and now live in PA. I love San Francisco it's a great city, but I was young(er) free and single at the time so my experiences were pretty much centred around that. I also lived in a youth hostel so mixed mostly with Brits and other Europeans.

I live in a very suburban area now, but it's very family friendly and the people I've met locally are genuine and nice. It's a bit difficult to compare the two, it's like comparing the UK and USA. I would love to live in northern CA if it was affordable, but don't think my husband would even entertain the idea of living in CA, I wouldn't want to live in southern CA, too expensive. I would definitely consider a move to Oregan or Washington state if it came up even though I've never been to either, and I know my husband fancies those states too. Although I hadn't thought about the bigger distance from the UK as pp mentioned. Sorry not much help am I.

Lived for 8 years in the SF bay area suburban nightmare and another 8 in Rockwell's depressed upstate NY. Lots of fun........

This just about sums it up:

Try California, but leave before it makes you too soft, try NY, but leave before it makes you too tough......

The differences are very real. There is a cultural divide in personalities and way of life.......;)

There is a third coast (mostly forgotten by everyone else in the US) and
that is the Gulf Coast. I know it is poorer than the rest of the states
and maby a little run down, but it is a nice place to visit (New Orleans, the French country of Louisiana, Mobile, NW Florida). The people are the friendliest in the world and the food is to die for.

Agree with most of what is said here, but wanted to add one thing I've noticed.

People on the East Coast are 'mentally' closer to Europe, in the sense that it is only 5 or 6 time zones away, and a day flight to get there. There also seems to be more expats on the East Coast than on the West Coast and more awareness of what is going on in Europe than on the West Coast (though both sides really don't care that much what is going on in the UK or Europe)

Out on the West Coast it is a much longer flight. You need to wake up at 7:00 am to watch football, and generally people don't really relate to what is going on in Europe as much. Tokyo is not that much farther (a few hour flight) than it is to get to London, and there are probably more Asian and Latin American immigrants than European (just guessing).

New Orleans???? You must be joking!

8 murders in the first 5 days of 2007, and, they're looking at putting a nightime curfew back in place!

You go 1 block north of Bourbon and you are putting yourself at great risk.

No thanks!

Jim.

West coast is more slow paced.

This got me thinking about the supposed vast differences between East Coasters and West Coasters' lifestyles and mentalities etc. Having only lived on the East Coast and visited the south of the USA I don't really have any idea what this other 'west coast' lifestyle and mentality is like.
I know there's been a big deal made about it in terms of people saying Cali is full of fruits and nuts etc etc *yawn* and the whole East Vs West rap wars in the 90's *double yawn*

Has anyone lived on or had experience of both sides? Did you observe the differences and can explain what they are? I'm intrigued to know if it's actually true or just a load of codswallop and stereotyping.

I dont really live on a coast as such, the closest one to me is the Gulf Coast, where i have vacationed a few times in Panama City Beach FL. They have the most gorgeous beach ive ever seen there and as a previous poster said the food is awesome. Just dont go during spring break time because its full of college kids getting drunk for the 1st time. 1 question i have of the west coast ppl though living in CA, are there really rolling blackouts at certain times of the year because yall dont have enough electricity to supply the demand?
