Default US TV Channels, help me to understand!

Hello!

We were finally connected to cable today - please explain - so we were looking for the main netwroks like ABC, CBS etc - but only find affiliates...are we missing something or is that how it is here and you don't actually get a channel called ABC etc etc......

As usual, please excuse my lack of knowledge!

Is it different from what you got on free to air?

Some channels are not the same, Cable where I am does not carry kids channel Qubo for instance. The affiliate thing does make it complicated.

Maybe check on a site like Titan TV, to see what you should be getting.

Stations like NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox are network stations so are run by local affiliates. You wont get a channel called NBC, ABC, etc. For instance, our NBC station is WTVC.

In tiny baby steps!

Daughter starts school Monday....I cannot believe people are allowed to take in McDonalds food for their children's lunch...she wasn't even allowed crisps in her packed lunch in the UK!! School seems good apart from that. Thanks for the advice and encouragement, it means alot.

I'll probably be accused of being a Brit whinger, but US TV is just awful. There is little worth watching, and no sense of "national." There are a few good programmes on things like HBO, PBS, but my god you have to search and the scheduling seems very variable (for example we sat down to watch "Masterpiece Mystery" last Sunday on our local PBS channel only to find it had been replaced by some repeat of a 1974 folk-rock concert for 3 hours). It's not like other countries I've lived in where there tends to be one-or-two programmes that everyone watches and act as an ice-breaker in conversations.

For children's programmes, pre-school there is quite a lot - once you get in the school years though, it's cartoon crap and endless advertising. Endless.

We do try and watch some of "Sabado Gigante" on Univision on a Saturday evening - Spanish game show with their version of Bruce Forsyth. Good for our language skills, but we keep having flash-backs to the "Fast Show." Scorchio !

Now, as a sometime XBMC developer, I would point you to build yourself an XBMC media-player, get BBC iPlayer, ITV, 4OD, PBS on-demand, etc on your telly. Plus most of the main US channels.

We try to watch the evening news here to stay in touch with the local goings-on; other than that, there really is nothing to see...
