Can someone please explain to me what the freedoms are that one is supposed to have in America and how they differ from freedoms elsewhere. I visited many crazy countries but have never felt so oppressed as here. Its not that anything in particular has happened to me its just an overall vibe of the place. Maybe its because people here keep banging on about this idea of freedom yet I have no idea what they are talking about.
The freedom to have an abortion (oh wait thats being taken away), the freedom for two men to get married (nope cant do that, even south africa is allowing this now), the freedom to drink in the street (nope have to go to vegas), the freedom to have a quick play on the slot machine (no gotta go to vegas again), the freedom to take my own life into my hands and walk across the road where and when i like (do you know how much a jay walking ticket is here?), the freedom to choose who provides my cable tv (its a monopoly stupid) etc. etc
sure people may see these as vices but they are also freedoms. There is very little freedom here, on top of that, the numerous laws that there are, are actually enforced and penalised extremely harshly (see jay walking ticket).
I think its because americans have no experience of the outside world and that they are taught from day 0 that they have freedom that they believe it. They have never really experienced freedom and dont really know what it is but they have been told they have it and nobody else does and they should be grateful.
Someone here said, well if you dont like it here then get out. That is just a childish and fatuous remark. Its the answer to everything here repeated like a mantra. Thats not always possible. There are husbands and wives, children etc. not all of whom are able to make that choice for one reason or another. They said that some people may not have the choice because they have come from some violent country or background, giving an example of an iraqui friend. Well we are not all coming from violent countries, we are not all seeking asylum. Some are here of economic opportunity, some are here out of curiosity, some are here because our companies force us to come. Most if not all of us here at BE are probably professionals coming from a 1st world country and not from the oprressed 3rd world. We hav enot come from a totalitarian state but a democracy, we know what freedom is too.. america does not have a patent yet on freedom.
It was not until I came here that I realised really what The Matrix was all about. We are living in the Matrix here.. well most of us and soon I want to get out and return to the freedom of gritty, dirty, smelly, crime ridden, beautiful old london. just have to wait for my contract to end in a few years time

But people, American people, are aware that the Posse Comitatus act has been repealed/suspended. They are aware that the FBI has access to records of what books you take from the library and that they can decide to put you on a watch list based on this, or even arrest you and hold you without charge. The McCarthy era was a walk in the park compared to this.
My wife and I would leave for home tomorrow if we could afford it but right now it is impossible. Not saying I don't love America, just wish I had arrived twenty years ago and could have enjoyed it. I pray the Democrats do something to stem this tide of terror!!!

The "any person" here - I believe - is generally regarded as anyone in the US. So it does afford some protection for non-USCs.
