I'm moving over in August on a GC and was intending to rent a car for a month or so too.... hadn't event considered that being a PR might cause a problem with a month long rental...Cobblers. Back to the drawing board!

You won't be moving to the USA on a GC. You'll be moving on an Immigrant Visa. You'll be come a US PR upon entry to the USA using your Immigrant Visa.

US PRs do not usually have any problem renting cars, even for a month long rental. You shouldn't have any problem. You can probably use your UK license at first, until you get a US one. Most car rental agencies provide insurance options.

So I've been looking at rentals for a month from San Francisco Airport.... should I be ticking the US Resident box or not?!

Confusing!

Yes, because by the time you arrive in the USA, and go to rent the car, you WILL be a US Resident. You will have your I-551 endorsement in your passport, which is the same as a green card.
