We've just done the opposite, taken our three US tv's back to the UK.
The biggest did not survive. Other two were fine. We can just run them by using plug adapters and using an HDMI cable to the cable box. They say on the back if they are dual voltage-120/220 .
I don't know why the biggest (40 inch) didn't work, and it would probably cost more to repair than buy a new one. So, it's a bit of a gamble, but worth it if you tv survives the journey.

It's different 240v supply though...so not that great for small items, nor worth the cost and hassle, not to mention letting your insurance company know about it and potentially have higher costs, because your cover would be void if you didn't tell them.

That goes for running a transformer too.

It's fine for an occasional use item like a power tool, but if you're using it day in, it's not a great idea.
