Network address translation

You need a port open for bit torrent to work at full speed. Your router is blocking it. You need to set up two things:

1/ A local fixed IP network for your machine with the BT proggy so it is always at the same place to the router. (By default, routers use a local DHCP server that hands out an IP to your computer when it asks for it. DHCP is a hackers friend so you're best knocking it off all together and fixing the local IP for all the machines on your network)

2/ A port forward on your router for the port your BT specifies to the fixed IP of your machine.

If you've no idea what I'm talking about, DON'T try it yourself. Get a local geek round to help you.

Do you simply leave it open for however long you want to after download complete for this seeding buisness? Just leave the file open, depends on the torrent software, but Azureus will by default let the file get to 1:1 before stopping it, though for popular files with a few seeds you might want to force seed to keep them going for a little longer.

As for the NAT thing, well it'll only slow you down a bit, be better to set up the port forwarding, of which I had a link a bit above as it depends on your router...it'll help with getting faster uploads, in that you'll get better connections.

I am just waiting for OH to come back and ask what the hell I've done to the computer! In my limited understanding I thought that seeding is giving the next person who wants the programme bits of it via your upload/bandwidth. my mistake was to download an old corrie that no one else now wants so its not really uploading much at all. Someone else can say if I've got that about right, I think we need to get popular programmes early that people will continue to download. Wow i'm becoming a computer nerd! :)

Ahhh, ok so on azureus when you have a seed number next to the program you have downloaded that is good right? Makes your ratio higher with uknova? what are peers? (not techy at all me!! :o ) so the longer i keep azureus open the better the ratio?? Arrrghhhhhh!!! I just wanna watch some brit tv :D
That must be why newbies with a low ratio can't download newly added programs for 24 hours?? It's making sense now :o

You've got it about right...to get good ratio, get something popular quickly, that doesn't have to many seeders, but a lot of leechers, people getting it rather than have it finished, a good one is "Life on Mars", which is a great show.

If you get a 1:1 ratio on Azu, then force seed it to help with your ratio.

People that are new, or have a shite ratio have to wait before they are able to download, so yeah, your right.

Peers are people your connecting to and the total number of seeds/leeches, Seeds are people that have the file, leechers are people that haven't and are getting it.

How do you force seed it Bob?
