Default Types of packing boxes

Was wondering if shipping companies insist you use their own packing materials to ship items back, or can you just go down to Bunnings etc and buy plastic boxes with lids and go from there? Many thanks.

Our company didn't specify that we HAD to use theirs but I guess they have all the ones we need at a reasonable price.

They can refuse to insure the stuff if they don't pack it themselves into their own boxes. The Allied Pickfords bloke told us this. He also said that their shipping boxes are stronger (and sure enough, all the Bunnings packing boxes we've used have weakened from being stacked, and the Allied Pickford ones are fine!)
It's easier and probably cheaper in the long run just to let them pack everything - especially if you want them to insure the shipment.

Happy traveling.

When we moved we bought some plastic bins to throw a few things in, and the guys just put the bins in a box.

It's an insurance thing generally.

Hi moonsurfer....we used a variety of cardboard boxes, some provided free by the shipping company, but most were from the local supermarket. Tape everything securely, label them well, giving each one a number, and write a list as you go.......make a copy of the list to keep with you. You may find that the shipping company re-number all your boxes and sticks an address label on each one, so oyur original list should help you find that all important wooden spoon you're looking for.

Apologies if I'm telling you stuff you already know....no offence!

Hope it all goes well for you

Wow, good to see you are getting to the cardboard box stage! Keep them light so if you have to heft them around you can lift them with ease (lesson learned the hard way at this end!)

Thank you all for your suggestions! Ended up buying a few 'Willow' clear plastic bins with lids and they seem to be doing the trick.

Yeah, it's an insurance thing. We did all our own packing in plastic totes and U-Haul boxes. We saved a bunch of money by packing it ourselves, but they won't insure it for all risks, only total loss. So if the ship sinks or the container is lost, we get our insured value back but if anything is broken during transit we can't claim. That suits me just fine, as I am confident of my packing abilities and I like saving money :-)

Cheers,
Steve

Depends if you do the packaging.....or the company....Chess would not insure any packaging I had done myself (turns out that was the best packed items as a lot of Chess items have arrived damagaged....) you can look in the yellow pages and find companies that just sell boxes...they will let you know what grade of box you need for shipping and price it accordingly.....there is a few companies in the Canning Vale Industrial area that supply boxes but I found them to be expensive compaired to when I bought from them a year before....good luck...
