Just one thing to watch for ... If you're a mileage collector, this fare *may* not be eligle for frequent flyer miles. That may be less important than the saving, but just worth a mention.

I checked and it is.
If I push my luck I could even go to the avis desk when I get to my destination and ask them to credit me with their airmiles too, and maybe even try for a raincheck on the rental

It's too late for next weekend, but for the future, bear in mind Southwest: $94-124 per leg, i.e. $188-$248 return, if you book (I think) 14 days ahead. (That's Chicago Midwest to Burbank).

What I would save on the flight I would lose on cabs, etc to airports at both ends
