I once was walking with my wife on the 4th July in her home town and as we watched the fireworks etc I could hear the national anthem playing.

I (in a slight drunken state) turned round and asked my wife in a slighty louder than usual voice...." why dont americans sing to their national anthem...if this was England everyone would be singing along"

Then I suddenly remembered what the 4th July is all about, Cringed and ducked into the nearest bar to hide.

I always answer "yes we were glad to get rid of you" hehe. We sometimes have a 4th of July party- any excuse to party LOL and we always stipulate NO dumping of tea in the pool and we promise not to have redcoats in the bushes:D The first year half the people wondered why we said NO tea dumping....

You can never take the trouble to attempt to learn any language other than English, but then get annoyed when you travel to another country and can't find anyone who speaks English. (Added bonus - You can also get annoyed if new immigrants don't learn English right away.)

I always enjoy 4th of July parties, and have done for many years.

It is important though at these events to remind them, politely but firmly, that if it wasn't for the French, they would all be speaking English now.

Top ten reasons for being American....

When a brit asks you a question, it takes you 10 times longer than necessary to explain the answer. Followed by about 3 examples of what you mean :-)

Please note: After 30 seconds WE HAVE GOT IT!

You can exist, like 70% of Americans do, without ever leaving the country, ever experiencing another culture, and happily believe with total confidence that any way that is not the American way is wrong.

Not different, just wrong!
