Is it proven anywhere that the US is more productive than Europe? Because all I see every day from the depths of cubicle land is people surfing the web, bitching about not getting any time off, or conversely, feeling guilty for taking time off!!
5 years to get four weeks off - seems like a bit much to me. Especially if you change job at some point and it's all of a sudden back to two!
This is probably the single worst aspect of living here for me. Just wondering if anyone else shares my "lazy assed European" approach to life in my desire to get four weeks off!

Imagine my Spanish wife's view of the vacation issue- in Spain they are given 1 month (in addition to 20 paid holidays off) and are given (by law) 1 extra month pay in both July and December.
Of course there is that pesky 15% unemployment issue in Spain and Europe as a whole...

I'd rather be unemployed in the UK than work 2 mcjobs here just to stay afloat...

I guess I've always been lucky that my bosses never had a problem with me taking time off from work -- even when it was sometimes unpaid -- to go back to the UK. I've worked at a variety of places and all were fairly generous with their holiday allowances. OH currently works for an insurance company and has 6 weeks paid leave with some extra days thrown in. Granted he's been there for 11 years now, but it's never been an issue when he's taken 3 weeks' vacation at a time.
