That's poor parenting. We correct "uh huh" or "yeah" into "yes" and "huh" into "excuse me" -- though "pardon" is more formal.

My family still say "huh" .... I still say "pardon", which they think is totally ridiculous when "huh" will do! I still stuggle with getting them to say "please", let alone "excuse me" or "pardon".

I say "pardon" but the rest of the family say "excuse me."

I associate "excuse me" with Steve Martin.

If someone says something to me thats rude etc.....and I say' excuse me!.'....everyone runs for cover.....if I use it on a post in other forums.....everyone leaves their PCs for a while....to come back after I've ripped someone a new one......My other one is "I'm Sorry!".....like did I hear or read that right...are you really that stupid......

The Americans laugh saying only a Brit could say sorry before laying someone out cold......

What disburbs me is the amount of people murdered in my city and the country, there is hardly any news coverage. It also disturbs me that everyone including me isnt afraid to go out.

Address the crime problem, but hey, staying holed up isn't much of a life.

God don't you'll give me nightmares I cant believe how safe I feel here and yet just this passed weekend 7 people were shot in my city. Maybe thats because the media don't go all loony about it whereas they would scare the living daylights out of you in the UK press, creating mass fear.

Americans who believe they are the only ones in the world with 'freedoms'.
Take this woman from the UK-yankee website:

What are Brits missing?:

At the start of your relationships wouldn't you have preferred for him to move to US rather than you move to UK? Leaving family/friends/what you know behind will usually always be hard, so I'm trying not to have that in the equation - just from an overall "where is life best" view. I agree it's subjective but isn't life "just better" in US?
I guess it's hard to understand why you would want to leave US, for example don't you miss the freedoms we have in the US?
Hi everyone. One of the US freedoms I'm talking about is to speak out publicly against the government / freedom of speech and freedom to have what is said in the news.
Hmmm - but don't the monarchy control the people ?
I think the difference in freedom is that in US we can be outspoken (speak in public/media) against government and (if we had one) the monarchy, and not just in privacy of our home or worried about action against us.
I'm just asking here having a UK bf because I find it helps best to have a non-biased view from Americans who have experienced life in UK and so can answer "intelligently". I couldn't do that on a Brit forum
