Garage sale signs - and realtor's open house signs that you see on street corners on Sunday afternoons - are illegal in many places. So complaining to the police that they've been "stolen" probably won't get you much sympathy

There's nothing worse than passing a Garage Sale sign at 30 mph, and having the actual address in small lettering that one can not read.

Then if you want, make 10-15 that give a desctiption of some of the major items. Post one SALE sign and an arrow sign pointing in the general direction (from where the sign is posted of course) on every sreet corner near your house, major intersection etc- posting the detail signs where there is a stop light, etc where people have a few seconds to read it. Buy 1/2'' x 2 '' lathing strips or similar to staple the signs to- plus staple to telephone poles or trees as practicle. When I did our sale, we went out from our house maybe 1-2 miles, and then brought the people in- one set of signs every couple of blocks or as needed.
