[QUOTE=slack alice;7231524]We looked at France, but found it too expensive and couldn't agree on a place that suited us all./QUOTE]

Putting visa issues aside for a moment, now doesn't appear to be a great time to move out of the UK with the pound as weak as it is. As little as a few months ago you could have gotten $2 for every pound.

Now you'd be lucky get $1.30... a huge difference when trying to transfer money for a home purchase.

I'm not a snob Sarah but I can give you a few good pointers about Vermont

1) It has the worlds worst drivers
2) Realestate is way too expensive, most ordinary folk only own homes that they inherited. Poor wages for workers and over the top house prices means they can't afford to buy.
3) Rutland and Burlington are the two busiest towns.
4) Vermont DOT do not clear the roads of snow very often because it would reduce the amount of tourists and rich bastards who come to the area.

The Lake District is a great place to live......I lived there for nearly 20 years and would happily still live there if I wasn't where I am now.
"Hardly anyone there" is definitely a bonus.
"No work" is not true. The southern lake district is experiencing an employment boom at the moment. The shipyard at Barrow currently employs 6000 people and is manning up to complete the Astute submarine programme and is just starting work on the Trident replacement submarines which will keep the whole of the town in work for the next 15-20 years.

The weather IS shit though

Barrow still is a pretty good night out. There's good pubs in Ulverston too. Or at least there was when I left in 2007.
