Stopped feeling of England as "home" a looong time ago... coming home for me is flying back to San Francisco and seeing that view over the bay and city. Maybe the fact that both my parents are no longer alive makes a difference. Otoh, although I can't imagine going back to live in England, I can well imagine living in a non English-speaking European country such as Italy or France. Life's generally what you make of it regardless of where you live. I enjoyed living in England, I enjoy living in the US, and I'm looking forward to enjoying living in on the continent at some point in the future.

Seriously, it is sad ... like that HORRIBLE expression, "we are like ... ships that pass in the night". I hate it. I have always hated the idea of being part of ships passing in the night.

We have had to come to the other side of the world but my son now sees his dad every night for at least 3 hours before bed, we have weekends to do whatever we want and its brilliant. People in the UK are so overworked its not true!

To be honest I think that really depends. I could return to the UK and work 3 days per week and so could my wife and we'd still be financially stable. I have worked stupid hours in the past and vowed never to do it again....

I really do not miss anything in the UK. A pint of beer or the BBC is not enough for me to go back and I do not have to worry about work. I like it here in SC where driving is a pleasure and the weather suits me all the year round.

OK, on the count of three you will wake up. You will remember nothing of this session. You will think you like SC, that ... "a pint of beer or the BBC is not enough for you to go back and you don't have to worry about work. You like it in SC, where driving is a pleasure and the weather suits you all the year round." On the count of three then, 1, 2, 3.

I think you should say your husband was so overworked it was untrue.....

IME, people here are so stressed all day from the long commutes and long hours they have little time - or patience - for anything else.

I'd not really say I was delighted to be over here.

Having said that, every time I go back to England for a visit I find myself wanting to go back home to America earlier and earlier into the vacation.

I'm approaching my 3rd anniversary in America this April and the first two years were the hardest by a long way. Having got a job/house/dog in the last year really helped though.

If I was given the choice of staying in America or moving back, I'm not sure what I'd do.

The only things that I really miss is the decent beer (although I drive past a world beer store on the way home from work and can pick up a few of my old favourites) and the guys at my old scout group (6th Pen Mafia, "The only way out is in a box")

Morning TruBrit, I have a doctors, errr dentists appointment at 12. Thought I might nip into Costco on the way there and buy some. Quick change in the car. That should impress them.
