Re: Thanksgiving
We're still in England, but i'll be doing Thanksgiving Dinner for DH & DD so they don't miss out, I've got all my stuff in to make pumpkin pie (for the yanks, the brits among us can't stomach it), then it will be jumping online to webcam with the kids that are in the states and DD's other set of parents.
I'm hoping that the interview will go well on Tuesday so we have something special to give thanks for! |

What's wrong with having 2 celebrations then, TXG and Xmas?
I love TXG. It's a great excuse to eat, drink, relax, no work for 4 days and all without the hassle of rushing around having to buy presents, decorate etc like you do when it's Christmas. I'm looking forward to next week:thumbup: I usually don't mind though, its nice to make Thanksgiving dinner, just would be nicer if we had more family around to share it. :) |

I'm looking forward to next week:thumbup: I'm with you on that. Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday. Since all the children and nieces and nephews are married and scattered to the four winds, there is usually only two of us for the holiday. This year my daughter who lives closer to us will be here with her hubby and our first grandbaby, Vix. Can I puree a little cranberry sauce and turkey to add to her bottle? ;) My Xmas shopping is all finished but for the stocking stuffers for DH so on BF I will drive to Massachusetts to eat someone else's leftover turkey and enjoy a sit down in front of their fireplace sharing gossip. |

It's not a real holiday just some stupid excuse for making people have thursday off then have to take the friday off without pay  What a stupid day to have a holiday ? Why don't they do what civilised country's do and take either monday or friday ? I dare say my wifes family will cart themselves over here to eat turkey and if they think I am gonna put NFL on Tv they can piss off  I love Thanksgiving! It is a non-religious, non-commercial holiday (no gifts, and no cards ... can you believe it - no Hallmark bullshit cards to send!), and is taken very seriously as a family get-together. I always used to get invited to join US families when they knew I was alone, and it was fabulous; good company, good food, etc. It is by far my favorite US holiday. Nowadays, my USC g/f and I go into Chinatown and have a fabulous dinner in a great restaurant. This year, we're also going to walk across the Golden Gate bridge for exercise. |
Re: Thanksgiving
just had a pre-thanks giving party lastnight at some friends...he always does a large dinner every year a week before thanks giving so friends can get together, especially some not seen on regular basis.
It was a lot of fun, though some of the regulars weren't there, one was in Florida, one in NY, one just got married and is on such a ball and chain that his leash is never allowed to be loosened and then another was at a company launch party thing. |

How do you 'not celebrate' a holiday!?! You don't go to work; you often get invited to other peoples' houses; what's not to 'celebrate'?!?! If you mean, you don't believe in celebrating the original reasoning/excuse for the holiday, that's fine - I don't give a hoot about whether the early settlers gave thanks to, or massacred (or both) the Indians. At this point, it's simply a time for the gathering of family and friends, with good food and good cheer!
my husband is the USC and i think they celebrated when he was living at home but he hasn't for yrs and so it's rubbed off on me. xmas is just around the corner and we prefer to gather with family and friends then  |

I've theorized that, in the bay area (which is very non-religious and populated by many immigrants), Thanksgiving is "celebrated" more than Christmas. I certainly see fewer cars on the road around 4pm on Thanksgiving Day than I do on Christmas Day. |

It boggles my mind that no one in corporate America has yet tried to tie this holiday to gift-giving, or at least, card-giving! I suppose the fact that Friday is a big 'Xmas Shopping' day is good enough for the biz folks.

That's funny.....That old geezer on 60 minutes said that (in his opinion) Thanksgiving is the most under celebrated Holiday in America. He also went on to say the Christmas is so commercial its sickening.
Christmas does turn me off these days; the pressure to buy gifts is quite amazing. Even my Brit friends seem to fall over themselves to buy stuff and send it over to UK. I long ago opted out of the 'gift' gig, instead paying for my family to come visit in the summer and nominally saying, this is instead of an Xmas gift ... works for them! I'm no scrooge, but what bugs me about Christmas gift giving is, people seem compelled to give 'something', and they will buy practically anything to fulfill this need - so the entire country is buying shit that no-one needs and no-one uses. Talk about being environmentally conscious - just quit buying stupid gifts and we'd save a massive amount of resources! We'd probably help our trade balance at the same time, since 99.9% of all the crap is made in China! |

I wonder how they measure 'celebrated'? Since we all seem to agree that it's a non-commercial holiday, the only 'measure' I can think of is, how many Turkeys are purchased! It is also supposed to be the highest travel event of the year, though - 'everyone' seems to be flying somewhere; airports are a mess and discounts are nowhere to be found.
