We haven't actually walked away from the O2 contract yet, even though we are now back in the US. We cannot get the contract amount reduced until June/July because we were told that we had to wait at least a year from when the contract was started. We're waiting to see how much we are going to get back from our rental deposit to see if we have enough to cover the rest of the contract or just walk away.

We don't have any plans on returning back to the UK to live so we don't really care about a negative credit rating, but we are concerned if his parents could be harassed by debt collectors. We'd never hear the end of it if his mum and dad were continuously bothered by them.

If at any point you admit to receipt of anything from the collector or the company collecting then the term restarts.

They wont turn up at your door over a few hundred....I would cancel it and if they ever do turn up just say you forgot about it and ask how much you owe, you can negotiate a lower price at that point.
