We live 30 miles from downtown LA but its wonderful
excellent schools and we also have some of the best colleges in the US which means there are some gorgeous hot college guys to stare at..or so my 14 year old tells me.
so clean you could eat your dinner off the floor
no crime
wonderful village atmosphere in our city centre
trees everywhere
beaches 40 minutes away
ski resort 20 minutes away
easy access to many tourist destinations, 20 minutes from Disney which I adore (
)
warm friendly people
lots of quirky individual shops in our village, our council allows no fast food outlets or big stores such as Walmart etc to open here but if we want those kind of places they're 10 minutes away..
the weather, we do get slighter more rain here than LA in general because of where we are in relation to the mountains but its alos slighter hotter in the summer and we most certainly do not get the smog as bad.
personally the traffic isn't as bad as people make out IMHO..obviously in the week its bad but then again so was the M62, at weekends can get to places pretty quick, drove down to Long Beach this weekend which is about 50 miles away, took 40 minutes.
downside is it costs a ****ing fortune to live here. If we had of moved a year later than we did we would be living in a trailer somewhere along the 5 freeway. :scared:

The New Jersey Turnpike goes to New York and the PA Turnpike goes to Pennsylvania, if I remember anymore I'll let you know.

Wrong side of life, plus the snow is a mega arse, but we are on the coast, not that hot, slightly humid summers....bloody high property taxes, a low 5% sales tax on everything but food.
Of the 28 odd cities in this State, only Portland would possibly be considered a city by UK terms, and that's a stretch.
Lots of cool water activities, lots of nice lakes, mountains and trails.
on the plus, $100K will get you a nice home, $250-300K will get you massive home over looking the sea and all sorts...

Thanks for all your replies. Regarding the climate, i would be happy with a sort of Southern France/Northern Spanish climate...so I look at a map and guess somewhere around North Carolina may be similar ????

In the states where its hot its either
A) Desert Hot. Ie. Very hot days/cool nights.
B) Humid Hot. Ie Hot and muggy all the time.

Mid-coastal California and the area north of SF has a quasi-Mediterranean climate. It's about the only place in the US that does, and because of this, it's extremely expensive to live there. And you have to sort yourself a job.
The only other spot I can think of is Hawaii. You wealthy?
Why people think they can find the combination of perfect climate/job/cheap housing is beyond me cos most of the perfect climate spots are already well-inhabited and expensive.

Washington/NoVa/Maryland has a pretty decent climate. Mild winters...Mild to Warm spring...Gentle Autumn and only three months of truly hellish summer where you need to stay indoors unless you like turning into a pool of sweat.
Moving to Seattle soon which despite the (pretty constant) rain is climactically closer to what is "normal" for a Western European.
Good luck wherever you choose.
