Tea?

Are we allowed to bring tea into the US? Will I have any problem with US Customs?

Brought a suitcase full of the stuff back from the UK a few years ago. You are OK with most foodstuffs...apart from beef products, meat products, cheese etc and no fruit, veg etc. Basically stay away from fresh products or anything containg a beef product ie oxo. Most dried foods, candy, cookies etc are OK.

JG, is this a recent thing? I've brought oxo cubes and gravy browning over and declared it before in the past and had zero problems:confused:

Yes, we always bring some Yorkshire tea back to the USA. Wouldn't want to drink anything else.

We always bring back gravy powder too and haven't had trouble with that. Strange how Americans don't eat gravy.

It's because of mad cow disease...but I don't know how long they've been banned. It's been discussed several times on here...quite recently if I remember correctly.

Depends on the Oxo Cubes variety. If it's beef or some other meat variety, strictly speaking, that's not allowed into the US. As for gravy browning, which does not contain meat or any of its derivatives, that's OK.

I find the Oxo thing confusing, because they list it for sale on the Brit Shop sites. Also, recently I have had 2 people bring me back beef Oxo. They never seem to sell it in World Market though, only the veg kind.

Ahh brilliant post, only English people could have a conversation like this - I love it :D

I had the same question myself (obviously) but would you adam and eve it i forgot to put some in my suitcase, so was forced to drink the super rank coffee they serve in these parts for a couple of days.

But, good news is, went to Walmart and picked up some Twinnings english breakfast, bit pricey but who cares, its tea. Then, a week later went to HEB and they only sell daddy boxes of PG Tips pyramid - I couldnt believe my luck!

Its the little things.

Well, that excludes me then, being Scottish 'n' all.

Last time I looked, this site was called BritishExpats.

I do like tea however, and have discussed the procurement of tea in the US, so I believe the logic that discussing tea in this manner only applies to English people is flawed.

"Super rank coffee" America is still stuck in the 1970s when it comes to Instant Coffee. For all their sophisticated filter coffee, they just don't seem to "get" Instant Coffee at all.

Yes, Twinings English Breakfast, or Irish Breakfast is not at all bad, though expensive, if I've run out of Yorkshire tea from the UK. Those little tags annoy me, though. I like proper tea bags in a proper tea pot.

Oh I'm sorry, slip of the tongue. I'm sure that tea drinking is rife in Scotland too.

Gotta say i don't get instant coffee either, what is the point? its just as quick to make real coffee, so why anyone would spend whatever amount of £ or $ on $hitty instant is beyond me. Lets face it i remember when they brought tea granules out, it was wrong to disrespect the tea by subjecting it to freeze drying and granulation, and what happened the tea drinking public stuck 2 fingers up and said we won't have it, its gotta come in a perforated bag or nothing, and instant tea disappeared

Why has'nt instant coffee gone the same way??

Sorry rant over.

Keep it REAL.......coffee

My sister still buys instant tea granules in the UK. I always take my own tea bags when I visit her.

Yeah, right! And I don't mean those kind of "biscuits" when I am talking about missing British biscuits. Mind you, I quite like American "biscuit", even if it's a bit salty. Here in North Carolina there is a fast food place called Bojangles which does great hot, fresh "biscuits".

Well, it depends what kind of instant you are drinking, and that's my point. You can't get great instant here in the US, so people don't know about Douwe Egberts or Cafe Noir, which if made properly are better than a lot of the bog standard filter coffee that is often served up here.

Considering the subject matter and the demographics of this forum, my children may well be posting on this thread in the cyber future......

Recently discovered World Market, either TyPhoo or PG......otherwise Tetleys from the grocery store.....just add an extra 3 or 4 bags for a pot ;)

Coffee addict, fraid to say........it tastes like cr@p (even percolated as I make it) but its great what it does to you.

A mug of tea is lovely as soon as you get in the door or on the weekends during the day.......its been donkeys years now and I still cannot drink "iced tea" There is someting just fundamentally morally wrong with "iced tea".....

 Absolutely right. At my first works lunch when I arrived here, I spotted a large jug of what I thought was apple juice. It was a hot North Carolina day and I thought, "Excellent, just what the doctor ordered". It turned out to be "iced tea". Yack! So many people drink it here that "tea" means "iced tea", and if you want tea you have to ask for "hot tea". But then they don't know how to make tea, so it's best just to have a coffee, and enjoy tea in the comfort of home.:)

Think of instant coffee granules but 500,000 times worse.

You stick a spoonful in a cup and pour boiling water over it. It resembles something like dirty dish water and tastes nothing like tea. You don't even need to add milk...it's in the granules.

so guess she just doesn't like t-bags then coz it couldn't get much easier to fix a cuppa than by using good old t-bags.

We'll see how long you last in San Antonio's summer without giving into a glass of "ice tea." Just be glad we don't usually sugar it in Texas.... sugared iced tea is the norm east of the Sabine.

I don't mind those *so long as* they aren't overpowering and they aren't sweet (sounds contradictory but it's possible).

My only problem is in Europe.... no bloody ice worth mentioning and I *eat* the stuff. Toon used to think I was odd but now he too consumes plenty of ice when it's hot. Even in the winter I want my ice!
