Another thing to look at, but some cities also tax a chunk of tax, no idea about those locations in CA stated, but worth looking into....most cities don't though, but better to be aware before hand just in case

I would say that is an enormous understatement. The loaded labor rate at my employer is 150% of the wage paid to the employer. So, to use your example above, to pay someone 10k a month costs us 15k a month.

To be fair, I think penguinsix was only talking about the company's employment and social security contributions. When we take into account those along with medical and 401k contributions we use a loaded rate of 140% for typical mid-range staff.

One more thing, make sure your UK employer pegs your salary to a US$ equivalent. With the $ to UKP changing so much over the last few years, and forecast to take a dive into the crapper over the next few years, you don't want to be taking the FX hit.
