Just had to laugh at the thought of someone kicking the 'balls' in front of Target......

That was fair enough though, because the temp was excessively hot, not just for hot coffee, but to cause serious first degree burns if you drank it.

It's about 50 degrees cooler these days because of it.

As part of one of my classes, I had to read more details about that lawsuit, it became apparent that the temp of the coffee was way too high. It wasn't as frivolous as the general public think it is.

As far as the 'beach' balls goes, well..that's what happens when the gene pool is thinned out like it is today.:rolleyes:

Probably the reason why when I order a coffee I have to ask for it 'extra hot' and why I often have to ask for meals in restaurants to be reheated... if I order something hot, I want it hot not 'just' warm!

there's a difference between hot and scalding 180F though :lol:

National Coffee Association of the USA]Your brewer should maintain a water temperature between 195 - 205 degrees Fahrenheit for optimal extraction. Colder water will result in flat, underextracted coffee while water that is too hot will also cause a loss of quality in the taste of the coffee. If you are brewing the coffee manually, let the water come to a full boil, but do not overboil. Turn off the heat source and allow the water to rest a minute before pouring it over the grounds.

Brewed coffee should be enjoyed immediately!

Pour it into a warmed mug or coffee cup so that it will maintain its temperature as long as possible. Brewed coffee begins to lose its optimal taste moments after brewing so only brew as much coffee as will be consumed immediately. If it will be a few minutes before it will be served, the temperature should be maintained at 180 - 185 degrees Fahrenheit.

Depends on the dissolved oxygen content and mineral concentration you want in the water - as water comes to the boil dissolved gases start to come out of solution, and if you boil a significant amount away then trace minerals (and chlorine?) will be concentrated. You can't over boil distilled water, but have you ever tried drinking it? it tastes weird.

I don't think it makes much difference for coffee in normal circumstances. Making coffee with water at 100C is bad though, as it tends to be bitterer than you'd like - some cheap filter machines run too hot and make awful coffee as a result. Usually pouring water from a kettle to cafetiere cools it enough though. </derail>

I actually read about that as a statistics thing also. I guess they did a bell curve of coffee temperatures and could show it was way over to the right and outside the spectrum of what could have been considered an expected temparature for coffee compared to D&D, Starbucks, etc, etc.

When I make coffee at home I always boil the water... I want my coffee to be somewhat hot when I get to the end of it.

Don't think the branch I visited in Charlotte today got the memo, they still had their "beach balls" out front. :D

Sort of cheered the place up I think.

I must be getting old. My first thought on reading the article was what in god's name does "Make summer funner" mean. Quickly followed by, if someone is stupid enough to kick a large concrete ball who are we to say nay. Just call me Victoria Meldrew.....
