That was fair enough though, because the temp was excessively hot, not just for hot coffee, but to cause serious first degree burns if you drank it.

It's about 50 degrees cooler these days because of it.

As part of one of my classes, I had to read more details about that lawsuit, it became apparent that the temp of the coffee was way too high. It wasn't as frivolous as the general public think it is.

As far as the 'beach' balls goes, well..that's what happens when the gene pool is thinned out like it is today.

Probably the reason why when I order a coffee I have to ask for it 'extra hot' and why I often have to ask for meals in restaurants to be reheated... if I order something hot, I want it hot not 'just' warm!

National Coffee Association of the USA]Your brewer should maintain a water temperature between 195 - 205 degrees Fahrenheit for optimal extraction. Colder water will result in flat, underextracted coffee while water that is too hot will also cause a loss of quality in the taste of the coffee. If you are brewing the coffee manually, let the water come to a full boil, but do not overboil. Turn off the heat source and allow the water to rest a minute before pouring it over the grounds.

Brewed coffee should be enjoyed immediately!

Pour it into a warmed mug or coffee cup so that it will maintain its temperature as long as possible. Brewed coffee begins to lose its optimal taste moments after brewing so only brew as much coffee as will be consumed immediately. If it will be a few minutes before it will be served, the temperature should be maintained at 180 - 185 degrees Fahrenheit.

OK, the physicist in me wants to know how you can " over boil " water :confused:

Depends on the dissolved oxygen content and mineral concentration you want in the water - as water comes to the boil dissolved gases start to come out of solution, and if you boil a significant amount away then trace minerals (and chlorine?) will be concentrated. You can't over boil distilled water, but have you ever tried drinking it? it tastes weird.

I don't think it makes much difference for coffee in normal circumstances. Making coffee with water at 100C is bad though, as it tends to be bitterer than you'd like - some cheap filter machines run too hot and make awful coffee as a result. Usually pouring water from a kettle to cafetiere cools it enough though. </derail>

Ah , so we are talking about " not boiling it for too long" , slightly different IMO

I actually read about that as a statistics thing also. I guess they did a bell curve of coffee temperatures and could show it was way over to the right and outside the spectrum of what could have been considered an expected temparature for coffee compared to D&D, Starbucks, etc, etc.

When I make coffee at home I always boil the water... I want my coffee to be somewhat hot when I get to the end of it.

Don't think the branch I visited in Charlotte today got the memo, they still had their "beach balls" out front. :D

Sort of cheered the place up I think.

I must be getting old. My first thought on reading the article was what in god's name does "Make summer funner" mean. Quickly followed by, if someone is stupid enough to kick a large concrete ball who are we to say nay. Just call me Victoria Meldrew.....

It's fun to superheat water in a microwave and then stick a spoon in it. Scares the hell out of most people though, especially those who aren't expecting it.

Re: Target 'beach balls'

I was on Kanipali Beach once, it was a little windy and as we were loading the car to leave my little daughters beach ball blew across the beach and into the water. She started screaming so I sprinted across the beach and into the surf. The ball was moving out but it didn't look to be moving too fast. I swam towards the ball and when I looked up and it was just a few meters in front of me. I increased my effort but every time I came up it was just out of reach. I swam furiously and it was still just out of reach. I became determined to get the ball, I felt I couldn't come back with out it so with single minded focus I gave it all I had. I never did get the ball and when I turned back the beach looked like a thin yellow ribbon way off in the distance. I figure I was out there about 45 minutes and when I got back to the beach my wife was livid. I remember her saying " THAT! WAS THE STUPIDEST THING I'VE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE". And maybe it was because the Beach Ball was free, it was left in the condominium we were renting, but I wanted to be my daughters hero, that's why I kept going. That's worth a lot more than a three dollar beach ball. My wife can never understand stuff like that. She thought I was going to get eaten by a shark (a woman was attacked just the day before on that beach) or that i'd get swept out to sea.

I can't say I disagree with your wife. A plastic piece of crap is not worth risking one's life for.

My daughter still talks about the time I swam out into the shipping lanes to get her beach ball back.

And would your daughter be talking about it so happily if you had been injured or died during that adventure? If it had turned out badly, how guilty do you think she would have felt over it? :sneaky:

I think this is a male thing... my husband has been doing some DIY lately and always waits till I have gone to work to go climbing on the roof!

I was snorkeling out there all morning so I really don't see the difference, and to be honest I was the one who dropped the ball.

I think this is fair enough. A main feature of a beach ball is that it is light and can be kicked around easily. Everyone knows what kind of force you can apply when you want to have a good kick of a beach ball. To take something as dense as concrete and disguise it as something that's light, full of air and fun to kick is asking for trouble IMHO.

Edit: I didn't actually see one of these so don't know how convincing the 'disguise' was.

Edit #2: I belong to the category of people most likely to be injured by these...
