Yeah, I just wish more people would realise this. It seems to be the job, the function of the new country to make the recently arrived person/s happy. If that doesn't happen, it then becomes the fault of the new country for not making it happen. Some people emigrate with such huge expectations of the new country, of themselves. Some learn and grow from the experience and I guess some don't. It just depends, yet again, on personal choice, personal circumstance. Would that learning/growing experience have happened if they hadn't moved countries ? Who knows. People who don't move countries still have growing experiences in life whether they are joyful or painful experiences.

I understand happiness comes from within. That's not a dig at anyone by the way.

A good point. Seems to me that what makes most people unhappy is going to work every day in jobs they hate. This is backed up by a lot of stats about happiness. When they change country they're still going to have to go to work to service the mortgage, so they can presume unhappiness will follow.

As you spend 5/7 of your life at work, if you are happy in your work, you will be happy almost anywhere you live, if you are unhappy, then you can bet unhappiness is around the corner. This is why many self-employed people settle more easily when they move, especially to non-English speaking countries. They sit twiddling about on the internet to make their money, but now it's in a French farmhouse instead of a semi in Reading = happiness. If they were driving into Marseille in the traffic and struggling with the language all day in a busy office = unhappiness.

In other words, they would perhaps be better advised to stay where they are and try and get a job they like, or start a successful business, rather than move abroad, or at least before they move abroad. The problem with that is that finding a job you like is very difficult and rare, and starting a successful business is even harder.

Completely see what you are saying and agree. My husband is doing exactly the same job here as he was doing in the uk, he tolerated it there and tolerates it here, difference being in his spare time he could follow his passion 90% of the time, here its about 30% he misses it, lots and I miss him.
