Suggestions to move savings from UK to US?

Suggestions to move savings from UK to US?
Hi,
I and the family will be moving to Seattle in August on an L1-A and I wanted to know what options one has to move savings from UK to US? I spoke with the Bank (Barclays), and they said I can walk-in and do this. We are interested in moving a larger percentage of our savings. Hopefully this will allow us to get a mortgage, etc. quicker.
I also read in some of the posts suggestions to use XE.com. I also found <<<snip>>> which searches some of the others - I have no experience with this and would appreciate if anyone has experience and suggestions.
One final thing - I am currently not in UK, but on secondment to Asia, and would prefer is somethign is available online instead of flying back in person.
