Suggestions for mini-break please!
Daughter 1, age 19, who lives in the UK - is coming over in July and we want to take a short family vacation - that would be hubby & me, and two daughters 16 & 19. Daughter 1 suggested the Grand Canyon - but I thought it would be prohibitively expensive especially in July. Another possibility is Florida - we could drive there - but I think they're a bit old for Disney, and beaches get old after a day, especially as Daughter 1 is very fair-skinned and burns in a snap.
Can anyone suggest an 'interesting' short break (4 or 5 days?) destination that would not take days to get to from Arkansas? Daughters 1 & 2 would enjoy a bit of shopping, eating out and sightseeing. Parents would be glad just to get through those few days without too much fighting ..... ;) |

Other places which are not too far away from Arkansas include Dallas or St Louis, Jim. |

What about St.Louis ?
Lots to see and do. The Arch, Botanical Gardens,Zoo,Art Museum ,tours of the Budweiser Brewery and lots of shopping. Not too far from Arkansas. |
Re: Suggestions for mini-break please!
Florida's going to be disgustingly hot and humid too. If she wants to go to the GC I'd take her there, it's fantastic, so fantastic we've been there twice. :) Dunno about it being more expensive, but you can stay in places outside the park (south rim) and it's not too far to travel back in. Florida and the theme parks will probably set you back a whole lot more anyway. Have fun, whatever you decide.

I can't think of a better place to go camping than at the Grand Canyon, nice morning view. |

Also, my daughters (17 and 15) have discovered a store called Sam Moon which is near the Galleria...it has loads of costume jewelry, handbags, etc etc etc and according to my girls it's "really cheap". Great steak restaurants (Saltgrass), Bring them to a Texas Rangers baseball game and a day at SixFlags. You've also got Fort Worth Stockyards, Downtown Dallas with the JFK museum etc. You'll be bringing them to the city that will (by then) boast the NBA Champions, the Stanley Cup winners, soon-to-be World Series champs and next years SuperBowl champs. |

Re: Suggestions for mini-break please!
depends on what you want to do and the like, but Maine really isn't to bad, out in Bar Harbor, nice cheap lobster shacks and the like to eat at, and whale watches, also national parks and mountains for gentle walks, plenty of water sports on various lakes.

I'd suggest a visit to San Diego - heaps to do, but it'd be a bit of a drive! |
Re: Suggestions for mini-break please!
Thanks for all your wonderful suggestions. Maybe I will look into Grand Canyon if there are cheaper ways than the more expensive hotels - I was thinking of the flights as well.
Ray - thanks for the offer of fun gun training, but I'm not sure they're ready for that.... Florida people - I didn't mean to be rude by suggesting there is only Disney there. But the weather is probably too hot at that time of year for us IMHO. Ironporer - I absolutely love your suggestion, I would do it in a snap, but daughter #2 would hate it. I know, you can't please all the people all the time. Everyone else - thanks for your great suggestions, I will do some research on them and get back to you! Thanks again guys. :) |
Re: Suggestions for mini-break please!

Re: Suggestions for mini-break please!
Suggestion: If you want to visit the Grand Canyon but not stay there you can go to Arizona and/or Las Vegas, NV and stay there and then take a daytrip to the Canyon (either by plane or bus). The girls might love being in Vegas and catching all the sights and thrills (not gambling) while having other excursions as well as the Strip. You can drive from LV to the London Bridge in AZ (a day trip), Red Rock Canyon just outside of the Strip, Dessert of Fire, Lead Mead (great cruises for lunch), etc.

I suggest that the op go online to expedia...even if you don't like their deals/pricing it can always give you an idea cos they have packages categorised into different locations according to your tastes....beaches....casino's etc :) |
Re: Suggestions for mini-break please!
Take them to Daytona during "Bike week".

Re: Suggestions for mini-break please!
Unless you're thinking about hiking into the Canyon, then 2 days is more than enough, as there isn't much to do, although it is well worth the trip. It will be pretty hot that time of year also. Vegas isn't that far away, but of course if she is 19, that rules out casino hopping and drinking, i.e. 99% of the fun to be had there. Phoenix isn't that far away either, but once again, the heat will be pretty tough in july.

Chicago? I would deffo second that one - totally beautiful, it's right on Lake Michigan, lots to see and do, very friendly, mega shopping, extremely diverse ... you can't go wrong with going to Chicago |
Re: Suggestions for mini-break please!
Well if you like history and stuff, going to the seat of power in this country might be an idea. Yup, Good Ole DC. Lots of stuff to see there!! Take a tour of the FBI building, drive down to Virginia to see the CIA, (just drive by, don't sit and take photos OK- HINT). Lots of stuff to do in DC.

I agree - we are about to do Vegas, GC, monument valley and four corners. Couple of days more than enough at the Canyon - and the hotels arent expensive - they arent especially good either!!! |
