Stock cubes?

Hi guys,

A really simple question (I think). I was looking for stock cubes the other day in my local HEB and couldnt find anything even resembling them. Is there something I should look out for, i.e. a US equivalent to OXO cubes? Or am I resigned to getting down to the local British shop? Also I cant find tomato puree (the proper stuff in a tube).

Thanks in advance.

There are bouillon cubes sold (one popular brand being Knorr -- but they are salty). If you can get to Central Market, they sell French court bouillons (in liquid form) as well as tomato puree in a toothpaste-like tube, imported from Italy.

I've bought American stock in liquidy syrup form in small jars. I think one brand is "Better Than Bouillon" (or something like that). Latino consumers do use something similar to stock cubes. The brand is Knorr but I've never tried these stock cubes.

I used Marigold brand bouillon powder in the UK and I get my Mum to send that to me.

Where do you live? Check for a local English shop, one here in santa clara, ca sells them.

Or check the web for an english market shop that will mail them to you.

Thanks for the replies. I've found loads of sites online that sell them so I will probably just do that. Amazon sell them as well surprisingly! They also sell tomato paste.

My local grocery sells organic tomato puree at a good price. It comes in cans here, and tastes great. I'm sure you can find the same over there.

Can't beat the flavor of OXO cubes though.

bullion, if you've got a brazilian or hispanic population, then get the stuff they use, as it's dirt cheap, can't remember what it's called though...also BJ's and Sam's Club have large tub of the stuff for cheap as well.

tomato paste, as mentioned, stick with the canned stuff as the tube stuff is way over priced.

Agreed it's overpriced but in a few recipes it can't be substituted for.... the taste and consistency IMHO aren't the same and if not careful you can get a tinned taste to the paste! ;)

OXO bouillon cubes Ingrediants....wheat flour.salt.yeast extract.cornflour.coloring.flavor enhancers.beef fat. yeast.dried beefbone stock.sugar.onion.and pepper extract. This taken off their website. Check the other brands as to what theirs are.
Never had a prob with canned goods tasting of the cans Heinz beans taste just fine.

Pasta or other sauces where the sauce isn't cooked for a long time.
