Stock cubes?
Hi guys,
A really simple question (I think). I was looking for stock cubes the other day in my local HEB and couldnt find anything even resembling them. Is there something I should look out for, i.e. a US equivalent to OXO cubes? Or am I resigned to getting down to the local British shop? Also I cant find tomato puree (the proper stuff in a tube). Thanks in advance. |
Re: Stock cubes?
There are bouillon cubes sold (one popular brand being Knorr -- but they are salty). If you can get to Central Market, they sell French court bouillons (in liquid form) as well as tomato puree in a toothpaste-like tube, imported from Italy.

Thanks in advance. I used Marigold brand bouillon powder in the UK and I get my Mum to send that to me. |
Re: Stock cubes?
Where do you live? Check for a local English shop, one here in santa clara, ca sells them.
Or check the web for an english market shop that will mail them to you. |

Re: Stock cubes?
Thanks for the replies. I've found loads of sites online that sell them so I will probably just do that. Amazon sell them as well surprisingly! They also sell tomato paste.

Re: Stock cubes?
My local grocery sells organic tomato puree at a good price. It comes in cans here, and tastes great. I'm sure you can find the same over there.
Can't beat the flavor of OXO cubes though. |
Re: Stock cubes?
bullion, if you've got a brazilian or hispanic population, then get the stuff they use, as it's dirt cheap, can't remember what it's called though...also BJ's and Sam's Club have large tub of the stuff for cheap as well.
tomato paste, as mentioned, stick with the canned stuff as the tube stuff is way over priced. |

Never had a prob with canned goods tasting of the cans Heinz beans taste just fine. |

Agreed it's overpriced but in a few recipes it can't be substituted for.... the taste and consistency IMHO aren't the same and if not careful you can get a tinned taste to the paste! ;)

Re: Stock cubes?
I have all visitors bring me vegitarian OXOs when they visit, that and tea. You can buy OXOs at Tea and Sympathy in NY, they have an on line store too.

Re: Stock cubes?
Maybe I am missing something. We have never had an issue with buying bullion cubes in any supermarket- they always seem to have beef, chicken, tomato and usually fish/shrimp, ham (in envelopes).
Am I missing something? |

Knorr chicken flavour cubes....... first three ingredients....- salt, MSG, partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil....... .... finished off with disodium something and some other weird thing I'm not sure what it is. And the other thing about OXOs; they are fun to crumble. |

ladies and gentlemen..we have officially reached the nadir. Au contraire Rodney, au contraire. I think we have reached the epitome of threads. I didnt realise it would raise such feelings. I mean what in this world could be more important than OXO cubes? I love the fact that there is a healthy debate on stock cubes - its good for the soul. |

Re: Stock cubes?
OXO contain meat extract and is technically banned from import without a licence ..
Orlando Airport is the only POE that I know which enforces it with enthusiasm... |

Do they not know what they are missing? Oh no, hold on, how foolish of me, the OXO cube could contain the big bad BSE (which the US has anyway and is just in denial about it). |

Re: Stock cubes?
Just thought I would update everyone (i know you have all been waiting for it ;)). I have found the US version of the classic stock cube. I have purchased both Chicken and Beef varieties. I have also purchased some proper tomato puree in a tube. Thank-god for HEB Central Market; it's a nice place with a great bakery, butcher, fishmonger etc etc. It's a bit pricey, but that's a technicality.
