I have to disagree a little here, California has ridiculous property taxes AND high state income tax. Every which way you turn here they f**k you over with taxes. Also the house prices are crazy, we looked at a 3 bed (1555 sq feet) a few weeks ago and it was $725,000!! So in relation to our wages, which are easily 3 times what they were in the UK I would say our standard of living is poorer - that's taking into account finances and other factors such as good quality food, choice of food (supermarket) and holidays.

That's what we have, well it's $20, but with all the tax it comes to $28, a then a couple bucks of phone use...they might have changed things since we signed up, but this was the cheapest on offer without a 12 month contract we could get...doesn't help when they own the lines and don't lease them to other companies in town.

I see that our new friend Celsius here is going for the Bob-style one-line posts. Interesting tactic.

Celsius, you've only got to post 21,755 more posts like that and you'll actually catch Bob up... if he doesn't post any more in the meantime!

Sausalito is one of the most posh areas in the US..... try Bakersfield and I bet your dollar will go a lot farther.

OMG, not Bakersfield again!

I wonder what happened to HER - did she go for Fresno or Bakersfield in the end?

Ahh Bakersfield, I'll live there...just after I finish having my balls jammed between two old bricks!

Sausalito is undoubtedly expensive but so is th whole Bay area. I'm not saying it's not a nice area, in fact it is stunning....just way too expensive!

Standard of Living and Quality of Life are both relative. While working a 9 to 5 job in a beige cubicle may not be everybody's idea of heaven, it sure beats being thrown up against a classroom wall by some heroin addled parent in Bradford. The fact that I get to leave work at 5pm, instead of 10pm as a teacher, means that I also get to have some kind of social life. Living in a warm climate watching hummingbirds flitting about the Bougainvillea beats just about any of the places I've had the dubious pleasure of living in in the UK. I can't afford a house here, but then I couldn't afford a house in the UK either. The important difference is that here I feel an optimistic sense that I can succeed, which was never the case in England. The fact that I can't get a decent pork sausage and nobody's heard of Bogpuss is, at this stage, a worthwhile sacrifice.

It obviously *isn't* way too expensive, then. You can bitch about it, but you ARE willing to pay.
